Kwara State is in the news for a good reason as thirty-one students from two of its schools scored impressive marks of between 300 and 358 in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

One of the schools is the Government Secondary School, Omu Aran whose student, Master Samuel Oluwasemilore, scored 358 in the examination.

The remaining thirty students who scored between 300 and 355 are from a single school, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College, Ilorin.

This impressive record from the state is despite the revelation by JAMB indicating mass failure in the examination across the country this year.

According to the examination body, a total of 1,904,189 sat the UTME while results of 1,842,464 candidates were released, out of which 76% scored below 200.

The news of the sterling performance of Kwara students has excited the governor of the state, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Saturday expressed the governor’s happiness, especially with the marks scored by Samuel Oluwasemilore of the Omu Aran government secondary school.

“We are proud of achievements like this. They serve as shining examples for young ones to work harder, be at their best in their studies, and make their parents and community proud.

“We are also excited that these are not isolated successes in our education sector, coming just few weeks after Kwara represented Nigeria on the global stage at the World School Debate in Singapore, among other feats,” the governor was quoted in the statement.

He also assured the people that the state would  continue to beat its own record.

According to him, KwaraLEARN programme is yielding impressive results already; “the state executive council recently approved statewide coverage for the tech-based learning programme.”

He added that the next few years would yield awesome learning outcomes.
