A live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has been announced, and updates are flooding in regarding Nintendo’s upcoming cinematic adventure. The video game series first debuted back in 1986 and was developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System by noted creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. The Legend of Zelda games typically follow the heroic Link as he battles his way through the land of Hyrule in search of Princess Zelda. While helping to innovate the RPG gaming format, The Legend of Zelda blossomed into a bona fide pop culture franchise.

Across 19 video games so far, The Legend of Zelda has become one of the most beloved gaming series of all time due in large part to its exciting gameplay and extensive lore. Even when the series was still new, Nintendo wasted no time in marketing its latest product, and characters like Link and Zelda appeared in cartoons, comic books, and a myriad of collectibles. Recent video game movies and shows have proven that they are a viable source material to adapt, and the high-fantasy of The Legend of Zelda is the perfect gaming property to hit the big screen next.

The Director Teases Game Details

Though news has been relatively scant about the upcoming Nintendo epic, the latest update sees the Legend of Zelda movie director tease game details. When asked whether fans would finally get to hear Link talk for the first time in the movie, director Wes Ball gave a vague answer that didn’t really answer the question. “A or B or C. I’ll just have it like the game – you just have little dialogue boxes pop up in the movie and you pick which one you want,” said Ball cheekily. While the director’s comments are obvious sarcasm, it’s still uncertain how the Link character will be approached.

Because of Nintendo’s noted protectiveness of their most popular characters and intellectual properties, the press briefing wouldn’t happen unless the ball was already rolling on the live-action film. There is no telling exactly how long it will be before audiences are transported to the land of Hyrule, but it isn’t likely going to be any time soon. In the press briefing, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto noted that “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it“.
