What The New Megalopolis Trailer Reveals

Megalopolis is described as a sci-fi epic, which comes through in the new trailer. Driver plays Cesar Catilina, an architect with the power to control time. Known for his idealism, he wants to use his ability to rebuild a New York City-esque metropolis that is in a state of decay and ruin. However, he is opposed by a corrupt Mayor (played by Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito) who remains committed to the regressive state of play. Julia, the mayor’s daughter (played by Game of Thrones alum Nathalie Emmanuel) is caught between them. She’s tired of her inherited influence and instead searches for her life’s meaning.

As the city collapses, statues crumble and protests break out, but there are also fancy red carpet events and elaborate entertainment parties that echo ancient Rome.

The latest preview offers a stark snapshot of the premise, as the opening narration raises the question of when, exactly, an empire dies. The query is posed while the sky is ablaze with flaming objects shooting down toward the city. Though the trailer offers a special focus on Cesar, who argues for a better path forward, there is also a focus on Aubrey Plaza. The actor, recently seen in The White Lotus season 2, portrays the well-dressed Wow Platinum, who certainly lives up to the name, appearing to be one of society’s wealthier individuals.
