New Star Wars: The Acolyte Poster Features A New Sith Lord, Jedi Starfighters, & More

A new Star Wars poster for The Acolyte features a new Sith Lord, Jedi Vector starfiigters in live-action, and so much more. Exciting is building for Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte, the next live-action Star Wars TV show. Set a century before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, this is essentially the prequel to the prequels, and it will reportedly reveal how the Sith infiltrated the Jed and the Republic. Headland is best known for the tremendous Netflix show Russian Doll, and this promises to be another mystery, albeit one with the addition of the Force.

Lucasfilm has released a new poster for The Acolyte on the official Star Wars site, one showcasing all the major characters.

…er is a beautiful one, stylistically designed as a homage to the prequels; its layout is reminiscent of posters for The Phantom Menace. But this is also an important one, because it offers an exciting look at some of the crucial characters and themes in the show. Let’s run through the poster, from top to bottom.

Mae Appears To Represent The Duality Of The Force

Mae is at the center of the story

Amandla Stenberg’s Mae gets prime position on the new poster for The Acolyte, and that makes sense; the entire story appears to be oriented around her. There’s something odd about the character of Mae, though; clips from The Acolyte have suggested she’s assassinating Jedi, while official descriptions have claimed she’s investigating the assassinations alongside her old master. This duality is clearly represented in The Acolyte‘s poster, which shows the two faces of Mae.

Showrunner Leslye Healand has hinted she believes duality is the key to the balance of the Force. As she explained in one interview:

Honestly, the way I look at it is, there is no light without darkness. No good without bad. So to me – and this might just be a personal thing – the Force is about balance. It’s not just a Marvel superpower. [The Jedi] aren’t using telekinesis because they’re special, powerful people; it’s because they’ve achieved balance. As Yoda says, ‘My ally is the Force.’ So the idea of a separation from that was really interesting… If you are unbalanced, the Force cannot protect you.

The two faces of Mae seem to represent this; one light and the other dark.

An Ominous New Sith Lord

While it’s true Sith aren’t the only ones to use red lightsabers, this show is known to be about the Sith – meaning the sight of a mysterious masked being with a red lightsaber can only be a new Sith Lord. Given The Acolyte‘s place in the Star Wars timeline, this could well be Darth Tenebrous, Palpatine’s master. This is presumably the Sith briefly seen in the trailer, powerful enough to sweep aside Jedi with ease.

Jedi Vectors In The Background

The Vector is the best Jedi starfighter in canon, a symbol of the High Republic Era – the centuries before the Skywalker Saga. Vectors are unique in that they are designed to be flown only by Jedi, with several features designed to require the Force; blasters can only be activated by using a lightsaber as a key, a way of reminding a Jedi of the significance of opening fire. Jedi Vectors have previously appeared in Young Jedi Adventures, but now they’re clearly coming to live-action.

Vernestra Rwoh Has Her Lightwhip

A prodigy among the Jedi of the High Republic, Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh was one of the youngest Jedi ever to achieve the rank of Knight. She served at a time of crisis for the Republic, battling on the front lines against the Nihil, the Nameless, and the Drengir, and proving herself wise beyond her years. Vern will appear in live-action in The Acolyte, set over a hundred years after she became a Master, at the tail end of the High Republic Era.

Played by Rebecca Henderson in The Acolyte, Vernestra Rwoh is one of the few established characters expected to appear in the show. The new poster for The Acolyte shows her wielding an almost-perfect replica of the lightsaber she uses in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The High Republic transmedia initiative, set even further back in the timeline. That’s important because Vernestra (or “Vern” as she’s sometimes nicknamed) has turned that lightsaber into a lightwhip – a weapon strongly believed to appear in The Acolyte. This poster seems to finally confirm that, a thrilling prospect.
