It’s been nearly a decade since the Bellas last sang their way into the hearts of audiences in a Pitch Perfect movie, and recent updates suggest Pitch Perfect 4 could be coming soon. Starting with the eponymous film in 2012, the series concerns the members of the acapella group known as the Bellas who put their differences aside to compete in national singing competitions. With its star-studded cast of 2010s icons like Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, it didn’t take Pitch Perfect long to become a blockbuster franchise with several sequels.

Spurred partially by the popularity of the viral “Cup Song”, Pitch Perfect cemented its place in 2010s popular culture and raked in a ton of cash at the box office along the way. Though the trio of Pitch Perfect movies grew steadily worse from a critical perspective, they all managed to be box office smashes and the timing seemed right for a Pitch Perfect 4 as far back as 2017 when the third movie premiered. Though a spinoff series, Bumper in Berlin, came and went years later, Pitch Perfect 4 never materialized. However, recent developments suggest a sequel is coming.

Rebel Wilson Teases The Film’s Development

With the years sliding by quickly since the last movie in the series, the latest news sees original star Rebel Wilson tease the development of Pitch Perfect 4. When asked about the much sought-after fourquel, Wilson was evasive but hopeful, and even let slip that something is brewing behind the scenes. “Hopefully there’s a fourth one in the works. There is one being developed,” Wilson said, seemingly unsure about its certainty. Rumblings have been happening since 2017, but Wilson’s recent statements are the first clues the sequel has ever received.

While Rebel Wilson’s comments about a film being in development are certainly exciting, it doesn’t serve as a confirmation that the movie is on the way. Scripts are developed in Hollywood all the time that never come to fruition, and Pitch Perfect 4 has not been officially announced by any studio or production company. However, the fact that Pitch Perfect 4 is currently being developed does mean that some thought is being given to sequel, and the overwhelming popularity might be enough to spur it to become a reality.

Will The Bellas Return?

The cast of the Pitch Perfect trilogy grew across its three installments, and any number of Bellas could come back to reprise their roles. With Rebel Wilson being such a vocal proponent for the next film, she will likely return as the comedic relief character “Fat” Amy Hobart who stole the show in all three movies. Likewise, Anna Kendrick will likely be on hand once again to play Beca Mitchell, the de facto leader of the group. Though he wasn’t in the third film, Adam DeVine could certainly reprise his role as Bumper Allen, especially after playing him in the TV show.

One of the biggest challenges facing Pitch Perfect 4 is that a logical story is somewhat elusive after the events of the third movie. 2017’s Pitch Perfect served as the reunion film, and did an excellent job of catching up with the characters after college as they pursue their lives. Pitch Perfect 4 could reunite them again, but the luster will certainly be diminished. Instead, the fourquel will need to devise a novel reason for the Bellas to get back together, perhaps with higher stakes than ever before.
