Edsel Kellogg III Isn’t A Real Person (William E. LaMothe Was CEO During The Pop-Tart’s Creation)

Though there are parts of Unfrosted that are grounded in reality, the character of Edsel Kellogg III is not. Kellogg III, who is played by Jim Gaffigan, is not a real person and was not the CEO of the Kellogg Company during the creation of the Pop-Tart. In reality, a man named William E. LaMothe was CEO during that crucial time for the Kellogg company and for food history.

LaMothe was the son of Dutch immigrants and lived in the south side of Grand Rapids. He first joined the Kellogg Company in 1950, when Harry S. Truman was president. LaMothe ended up retiring as a Kellogg Foundation trustee in December of 2000 and by that time, he had spent more years at the company than the company’s founder. LaMothe passed away in 2022 at 95 years old. Reports suggest that he was a visionary leader, though Unfrosted chose to portray the company’s CEO as somewhat of a bumbling executive.

Marjorie Post Died In 1973 At Age 86

Played by Amy Schumer, Marjorie Merriweather Post was one of the first female executives. She was also one of the wealthiest women in America, and her story was a primary focus in Unfrosted. The famous Mar-a-Lago, which is now owned by Donald Trump,was actually built for Post and her husband, E.F. Hutton.

Post passed away in 1973 at 86 years old. After her death, Mar-a-Lago was given to the federal government. The high costs of maintaining the property, however, resulted in it being returned to the Post Foundation in 1981. Post was survived by her three daughters, Adelaide Close, Eleanor Post Close, and Nedenia Hutton. The three daughters recieved the bulk of their mother’s estate and have since all passed away.

Do The Post & Kellogg Families Have Control Over The Companies Today?

The Post and Kellogg families do not currently have control over the companies today. Both companies are publicly traded, meaning their ownership is divided into shares bought and sold on stock exchanges. Thousands, if not millions, of individuals and institutions hold these shares, which makes it difficult for a single family to hold a controlling majority.

Even if the descendants of the Post and Kellogg founders inherited stock, it would have likely been divided amongst multiple heirs over generations. These individual holdings would likely be a small percentage of the total company shares, offering little control to these families. These families likely still reap the massive financial rewards of the companies, though they do not have much control over them.
