Launched in 2007, Hulu is one of the original major streaming services. Like other streaming services in the past year, Hulu has begun cracking down on password sharing, however, as one of the few to include unskippable ads during TV shows and movies, it does offer lower-priced subscriptions.

Hulu offers plenty of original movies and programming alongside its large library of network and Hollywood titles, yet it is always changing, meaning that not every piece of content will be there forever. July 2024 will see many notable titles leaving the streaming platform, including a collection of Wes Anderson movies, acclaimed horror movies like The Babadook and Werewolves Within, and Oscar-winning hits like Black Hawk Down and Walk the Line. The Babadook (2014)

Fans of more recent horror movies will be sad to see one of the most acclaimed entries into the elevated horror subgenre leaving Hulu on July 17. The Babadook is a powerful and engrossing story of a widowed mother attempting to raise her troubled son in the aftermath of tragedy. When her son finds a mysterious book about a character known as Mr. Babadook, it unleashes a terrifying entity that begins to haunt their lives.

Mr. Babadook makes for a terrifying movie monster but the movie is far deeper than simply being about a supernatural creature hunting this family. It is one of the genre’s most insightful pieces about grief and depression with a powerful message in the midst of this deeply unsettling horror story. While Hulu has plenty of horror options, this is one that users should check out while they still can.

Werewolves Within (2021)

Video game adaptations have had a notoriously difficult time on the big screen, but one of the best video game movies sadly went unnoticed by a lot of people. Werewolves Within was a multiplayer game set in a medieval town where the players have to guess which of the townsfolk is actually a werewolf in disguise. The movie version brings a modern setting to the story, following a group of colorful characters in a small town snowed in during a storm when they begin to suspect there is a werewolf among them.

Part of what makes the movie work so well is that it uses its fun premise to embrace the comedic elements. It is a silly and wild ride filled with some great gore and laugh-out-loud moments. A strong comedic ensemble with Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, and Harvey Guillén, and the whodunnit mystery gives it a similar vibe as 1985’s Clue. This movie similarly flew under the radar and Hulu users only have until July 17 to see it.

13 Going On 30 (2004)

The 2000s produced some beloved teen rom-coms and 13 Going on 30 remains one of the most popular. The movie utilizes the tried-and-true body swap formula for the story of a young teenager in the late 1980s who suddenly wakes up as an adult living in 2004. Jennifer Garner steps into the lead role, having a lot of fun playing the bubbly energy of a teen who is navigating the complicated world of grown-ups.

Garner really elevates the movie with her acclaimed performance, but she is backed up by a strong supporting cast that also includes Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, and Mark Ruffalo as Garner’s love interest. With the movie leaving Hulu on July 31, there will likely be a lot of users who will want to enjoy the nostalgic fun of the light-hearted comedy.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

One of the most visceral war movies ever made will be leaving Hulu on July 31. Black Hawk Down is Ridley Scott’s retelling of a disastrous United States military operation in 1993 when US soldiers went into Somalia to capture generals of a warlord only to find themselves surrounded by rebels and fighting their way out of the chaotic city. The movie operates like an extended gunfight with the brutality and harrowing experience never being shied away from.

Scott’s direction carries the intense movie through the large collection of characters and frantic action sequences while still telling an emotional story of comradery and bravery among these soldiers. Black Hawk Down’s cast is led by the likes of Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, and Eric Bana, but it also features a lot of future stars like Orlando Bloom, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Tom Hardy.

Five Wes Anderson Movies

July 31 is a tough day for Wes Anderson fans on Hulu as five of the auteur filmmaker’s movies are being removed. Anderson has cemented himself as one of the most distinct and beloved American filmmakers of the last 30 years. His movies all showcase his own unique style, witty dialogue, and star-studded casts, which are elements that have come together to create some truly brilliant movies. Unfortunately, many of them are leaving Hulu.

Among the departing movies include The Royal Tenenbaums which is Anderson’s look at an eccentric family of geniuses, The Life Aquatic with Bill Murray as a brutish and lonely explorer, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox which is the stop-motion animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book. Fans of Anderson still have time for a marathon-watching session on Hulu before these and more titles are removed at the end of the month.
