Practical Magic 2, a sequel to the cult classic witch movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is officially happening after 26 years. Directed by Griffin Dunne, based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, the film follows two witch sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens, who were raised by their eccentric aunts and, as adults, must use their powers to defeat the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend. Other than Bullock and Kidman, the Practical Magic cast also includes Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, and Goran Višnjić.

What To Expect From Practical Magic 2

Cast, Writer, Plot, & More

A subsequent report from Deadline specifies that Bullock and Kidman are only in negotiations to return for Practical Magic 2. It’s unclear if there will be opportunities for Channing, Wiest, Quinn, and Višnjić to also return. The Oscar-winning Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), who co-wrote the first film alongside Robin Swicord and Adam Brooks, will reportedly return to write the script for the sequel. For now, plot details for the sequel are under wraps.

Practical Magic: 15 Best Quotes, Ranked

Practical Magic is the perfect Halloween rom-com and story of sisterhood, and these are the best and most memorable of Practical Magic quotes.

In Practical Magic, the Owens family is cursed and any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an untimely death. However, by the end of the film, Sally and Gillian break the Owens curse and are finally embraced by their small Massachusetts town and accepted as witches. Considering this conclusive ending, there isn’t a natural progression for a sequel to take. Practical Magic 2 could explore the next generation of Owens family witches dealing with a new curse.

The announcement of Practical Magic 2 is certainly a surprise. The first film was panned by critics for its jarring tonal shifts and holds a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 24%. However, Bullock and Kidman’s chemistry makes a compelling case for the sequel. Practical Magic wasn’t a box office success either, making $68 million against a $75 million budget, though it has since garnered a cult following. Since it was neither a critical nor commercial success upon its release, it’s unclear if the cult following it has gained in subsequent years will be enough to result in a successful sequel.
