Since 1990, Will Smith has appeared in a number of movies and series. In 2024, it seems he has no intentions of stopping, as he has five movies slated for the near future. While some of these upcoming Will Smith movies are sequels or remakes, stirring excitement from fans, others are completely new properties that will hopefully put Smith back on the map after his infamous slap moment at the 2022 Oscars. Though Smith’s most recent film was 2022’s Emancipation, his most popular film that came out in recent years was 2021’s King Richard, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Will Smith’s future in movies is exciting because audiences will get the chance to see Smith return to beloved roles and originate new ones. Of course, that just means the movies have to be as great as they seem on paper.

A highly anticipated Will Smith movie sequel is I Am Legend 2. The original apocalyptic thriller follows a survivalist virologist who attempts to find a cure for a man-made plague. According to Variety, the new film will follow an alternate ending wherein Smith’s Robert Neville survives. One particularly exciting addition to the film is Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. I Am Legend 2 is still early in its development, therefore the other cast members and plot are still very much under wraps. However, of all the upcoming Will Smith movies, this may be his most exciting.

Planes, Trains, And Automobiles

Unknown Release Date

A common trend among new Will Smith movies is a long development period, and this is certainly true of his and Kevin Hart’s Planes, Trains, and Automobiles remake. In 2020, it was announced that the pair would star in a remake of the 1987 comedy, following a no-nonsense businessmen traveling with a talkative stranger. In early 2023, Kevin Hart noted he was still writing the screenplay, and since then, little news about the film has been released. With Smith working on so many projects, it is not surprising that this incredibly beloved remake may take a bit longer than usual.

The original Planes, Trains, and Automobiles starred Steve Martin and John Candy.

Fast And Loose

Unknown Release Date

Yet another Will Smith movie that has long been in the works is his Netflix action thriller, Fast and Loose. Though the film was announced back in 2022, it was put on the back burner after Will Smith’s 2022 Oscars controversy in which he slapped Chris Rock. It was also affected by director David Leitch leaving to focus on 2024’s Fall Guy. However, two years later, it seems that Fast and Loose may make its comeback. Variety notes that Smith is filming the movie back-to-back with Bad Boys 4, which means Fast and Loose could be coming up soon.

The Council

Sad Will Smith in I Am Legend

In 2019, Will Smith was cast as the lead in a new Netflix film called The Council. Smith would star as Nicky Barnes, the real-life leader of an African-American criminal organization that held sway over Harlem, New York in the 1970s. Barnes was nicknamed “Mr. Untouchable” by the New York Times, but eventually fell from his perch. Unfortunately, the movie has been stuck in pre-production for years, with Will Smith’s casting being the only announcement for a long time. No news has come out about the movie since 2021, which makes this Will Smith movie one that may stall.

In the end, Will Smith has a bright future ahead of him. With Bad Boys: Ride or Die coming to theaters in June 2024, and exciting properties like I Am Legend returning, Smith can finally prove that he deserves to remain on the big screen. The only thing standing in his way is development hell. Hopefully, The Council and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles can pull themselves out of pre-production and finally start filming. If all of these movies come to fruition, then Will Smith can start finding real success once again.

Will Bad Boys 5 Happen?

Both stars expressed interest in returning

Both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have already revealed their conditions for returning to the Bad Boys franchise for a fifth installment, which seems increasingly likely due to the box office success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Smith commented on the prospect of Bad Boys 5, “I never wanted to be one of those dudes who make sequels just because people will go. I want to make them because there is something to say and the characters have a place that they’re developing to that will be interesting and fun to watch and maybe even a little helpful.” Lawrence shares similar sentiments, saying “So as long as the fans want it and the demand is there, I’ll keep trying to give them what they want. We’ll have to see.”
