Julia Fox Calls Kanye West a ‘Blessing’ for Creative Control but Affirms Self as Her Own Muse

Julia Fox recently opened up about her relationship with Kanye West, describing it as a “blessing” that helped her find a path to creative control, yet asserting that she has always been her own muse. The 34-year-old actress and model made these revelations on The New York Times’ ‘Popcast’ podcast, where she discussed her life and career before, during, and after her relationship with Kanye, 47. The pair were first seen together on a date in Miami, Florida, in early January 2022.

Recounting their initial meeting, Julia Fox told Interview Magazine that she met Kanye on New Year’s Eve in Miami, and there was an “instant connection.” She noted, “His energy is so fun to be around. He had me and my friends laughing, dancing, and smiling all night.” Their connection led them to continue the night by flying to New York City to see ‘Slave Play,’ followed by a dinner at Carbone, one of Fox’s favorite restaurants.

Julia Fox shared an anecdote from their date at Carbone, where Kanye orchestrated an impromptu photo shoot, much to the delight of other patrons. “Everyone loved the stunt and cheered us on while it was happening,” she said. The evening continued with Kanye presenting Fox with a hotel suite filled with clothes, which she described as a “real Cinderella moment.”

Their whirlwind romance was brief, ending the following month. Reflecting on her time with Kanye, Fox told ‘Popcast’ hosts Joe Coscarelli and Jon Caramanica that Kanye’s influence was transformative. “It was actually a blessing that he came into my life because he kind of shook up my team in a way where a lot of the creative control was then given back to me,” she explained.

Fox elaborated that before meeting Kanye, she felt pressured to conform to a Hollywood starlet image that didn’t resonate with her. She often found herself conceding to her team’s vision to avoid conflict. Kanye’s entrance into her life challenged this dynamic, empowering her to reclaim her creative autonomy. “I’m going to do what I want to do,” she said, noting the significant shift in her career and personal expression after their relationship ended.

Despite the positive impact Kanye had on her creative journey, Fox made it clear that she has always been her own muse. “In the same way, I’m my own muse I’m also my own downfall,” she stated, emphasizing her self-reliance and the importance of self-belief in her work. The newfound freedom and resources that followed their relationship allowed her to explore her unique fashion sense and artistic vision more fully.

Fox also addressed misconceptions about her success in the fashion industry, asserting that her style and achievements were her own, independent of Kanye’s influence. “I started to hear this whole thing like, ‘Oh, well she’s only killing it in the fashion because it’s Kanye.’ And I was like, ‘No, these are my looks. I’m putting them together,’” she emphasized, highlighting her desire to prove her individual talent and creativity.

Julia Fox concluded by rejecting the inauthentic vision her team had for her post-‘Uncut Gems,’ stating, “It didn’t feel fun and I don’t want to do anything that isn’t fun. I’d rather pack it up and just leave and go do something else.” Her reflections reveal a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, with Kanye West playing a pivotal yet supporting role in her story.
