Summary

  • Maya Erskine hints at an exciting development for
    Mr. & Mrs. Smith
    season 2.
  • Erskine does not confirm if she’ll return for season 2 to avoid spoilers.
  • The actor stated that plans for season 2 may be even better than the first, but casting is uncertain.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith star Maya Erskine offers a preview of season 2, even as she dodges questions about whether she’ll return. From co-creators, Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, Mr. & Mrs. Smith quickly became a hit for Prime Video when it premiered in February and was renewed for a second installment. But since then, unconfirmed reports have mentioned that Erskine and Glover would not be reprising their lead roles. Sloane has since cast doubt on those reports, though no official announcement has been made.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Erskine was asked about her status for Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2. Though the PEN15 actor declined to confirm whether she’d be back, stressing that she doesn’t want to ruin the season 1 finale, she does say that she thinks the upcoming episodes will be even better and hints at a really exciting development. Read Erskine’s remarks below:

I do know some things. I mean, I just have to keep saying the same thing where it’s like—because we don’t want to, you know, the whole point of having a cliffhanger is so you have the fun that of when you watch the next season. And, because it’s now officially renewed, I can say that the plans for the second season are going to be… I think it’s going to be even better than the first season. I can’t say whether that includes us or not. But I do think it’s going to be a really— if they commit and go that way, it could be really exciting.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 Is Intriguing (But A Big Risk)

There’s Potential In Finding A New Lead Couple

Erskine stresses the importance of the unresolved Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s season 1 ending. John and Jane are seemingly cornered and near death, bested by another pair of Smiths (played by Parker Posey and Wagner Moura) who are essentially experts at killing other spies that are no longer useful to the secret organization that they’re all a part of. With just one bullet left, Jane goes out to kill Posey and Moura’s characters. It’s left ambiguous who survives.

Erskine and Sloane’s recent remarks come as Mr. & Mrs. Smith hopes to be in contention at the upcoming Emmy Awards and part of the reason why the show is in the conversation to be nominated is due to the chemistry between Glover and Erskine. Their versions of John and Joe can be alluring, as spies should be, but they can also be unglamorous and reminiscent of any couple even in their heightened circumstances.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Already Teased The Show’s Best Future (& It’s Not An Anthology)

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is going in a surprise direction for season 2, but the debut season may have introduced the perfect focus for the show’s next story.

Some of the glowing reviews of the Prime Video show compared it to an action version of Marriage Story with spies, referring to the Netflix drama with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. There will be a lot of curiosity about the casting of Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 and the new leads, if it comes to that, but there’s a risk that a lot of the show’s charm depends on which couple is at the center and can’t quite be replicated.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
season 1 is available to stream on Prime Video.
