Drag Me To Hell 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Sam Raimi’s 2009 cult-classic horror movie, and the followup to Drag Me To Hell may finally be on its way. Since releasing over a decade ago, writer-director Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell has gained a solid following, with many holding it in the same esteem as the director’s earlier works like 1981’s The Evil Dead or 1990’s Dark Man. While even Raimi has at points been adamant that Drag Me To Hell 2 was unlikely to appear, it seems that his partnership with Ghost House Pictures has finally pushed the sequel ahead.

Drag Me To Hell focused on Christine (Alison Lohman), a bank loan officer who, thanks to denying an elderly Roma woman a loan, finds herself cursed to be dragged to hell. She witnesses a multitude of supernatural happenings and, much to the shock of skeptic boyfriend, Clay (Justin Long), is literally taken to the underworld. With a cliffhanger ending that felt ripe for a sequel and a deeper lore teased thanks to flashbacks to 1960s Pasadena, the demand for Drag Me To Hell 2 has always been high, and development has finally started on the next chapter.

The most recent Drag Me To Hell 2 news came on March 8, 2023. While it was a tentative update it was a positive one regardless, as director Sam Raimi confirmed that early development on the sequel to Drag Me To Hell had started. In a Reddit AMA, Raimi revealed that work on Drag Me To Hell 2 had already started, and that he was eager to see how the story could be continued in the long-awaited sequel — “The team at Ghost House Pictures: Romel Adam and Jose Canas, are trying to come up with a story that would work and I’m anxious to hear if they do!“.

Unfortunately, nothing has materialized in the years since. Though most of 2023 was lost due to the WGA writer’s strike, nothing has surfaced since that labor action was resolved in September 2023. It’s clear from Raimi’s comments that he wants the script for Drag Me To Hell 2 to be perfect, and that could mean a series of major revisions.

Work Is Happening Behind The Scenes

Drag Me To Hell 2 is confirmed, at least insofar as development has started on the sequel to Sam Raimi’s cult-classic 2009 horror movie. Evil Dead Rise producer Romel Adam and Ghost House Pictures’s director of development Jose Canas were reportedly working on the follow-up to Drag Me To Hell in early 2023. However, it’s still likely very early in the process, and there’s yet to be an official announcement from a studio announcing Drag Me To Hell 2 has the production greenlight.

Drag Me To Hell 2 Cast

No Cast Members Are Confirmed Yet

There have been no announcements yet for the Drag Me To Hell 2 cast. Since it’s in early development, it’s likely that the roles needing to be filled still haven’t been decided. 2009’s Drag Me To Hell starred Alison Lohman (The Vatican Tapes) as Christine. However, Lohman retired from acting in 2016 and Christine was dragged to hell at the end of the first movie, so her return seems unlikely.

Justin Long (Tusk) also starred as Clay Dalton, a professor and Christine’s boyfriend. He proposes to Christine just before she’s literally dragged into the underworld. Given that Long’s stock as a horror actor has only increased since 2009’s Drag Me To Hell it’s highly likely he could return for Drag Me To Hell 2 if the story allows.

According to comments from Sam Raimi in early 2023, the story of Drag Me To Hell 2 is still being conceived. His remarks also seemed to indicate that, despite writing and directing Drag Me To Hell, he wasn’t involved in concocting the plot for the sequel. While the 2009 original ended the story of the central character rather definitively with Christine being dragged into the underworld, the premise left more than enough scope for a followup.

Any predictions around the Drag Me To Hell 2 plot are entirely speculative at this point. However, it seems likely that it will try to resolve Drag Me To Hell’s cliffhanger around Clay. Clay not only saw Christine dragged to hell, but his holding on to the cursed button she’d tried to rid herself of sealed his fate. Clay, a skeptic throughout the movie, learned the truth about the Lamia and Christine’s curse far too late. Resolving this thread is an obvious route Drag Me To Hell 2 could go – perhaps with Clay even trying to venture to hell himself to rescue Christine.
