Fresh Euphoria Report Makes Me Even More Concerned About HBO's Season 3

Summary

  • Euphoria season 3 faces major delays and reported conflicts between Zendaya and Sam Levinson, sparking doubt among fans.
  • Euphoria season 3’s story remains to be revealed.
  • Despite ongoing issues, there is still hope for Euphoria season 3 to proceed as planned, with filming set for January 2025.

A recent report about HBO’s Euphoria season 3 revealed a major conflict between the cast and creator Sam Levinson, which makes me even more concerned about the future of the show. In 2019, Euphoria hit the scene as an edgy new teen drama that pushed boundaries. I and countless other viewers were immediately invested in the uniquely flawed characters and their dark situations. However, Euphoria has been on a backslide recently. Though Euphoria season 3 was confirmed in early 2022, very little progress has been made.

At this point, it isn’t entirely clear what Euphoria season 3 will be about. Although the first two seasons followed Rue, Jules, and the rest of the Euphoria cast in high school, season 3 will reportedly include a time jump. This will age the characters into adults. While I think this change is necessary, it leaves many questions about how Euphoria will bridge the gap between high school and adulthood. I fear that the show could be irrevocably changed, perhaps not in good ways, especially after recent reports.

Zendaya & Sam Levinson’s Conflict Explained

Per The Hollywood Reporter, there has been drama between Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Zendaya. Though the two have previously acknowledged their tight creative bond, this news insinuates that their relationship has broken down. According to THR, Zendaya reportedly began to feel irritated with Levinson when he began working on The Idol, even though he hadn’t finished Euphoria season 3. The situation seemingly grew worse when Levinson faced backlash from an article that claimed that The Idol’s set was problematic. Despite meetings with HBO executives, it seems that Levinson and Zendaya are not on the same page.

While Sam Levinson is at the head of Euphoria, Zendaya’s role on the show is vital in front of and behind the camera. Not only is she the star of the show, but she has taken on a producing role as well in season 2. This means that if Zendaya isn’t on board with Euphoria season 3 or the creative direction the show is heading, things could fall through. I can’t help but think that if Levinson and Zendaya don’t find common ground, Euphoria could very well fall to the wayside, especially because it’s impossible to imagine Euphoria without Zendaya.

Since 2022, Euphoria has faced several delays and problems. While season 3 was supposed to start production at the end of 2023, this deadline was pushed after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Then, the sudden death of Angus Cloud forced Levinson to make major rewrites. At the start of 2024, Sam Levinson officially delayed productionto overhaul the season’s scripts. This includes the alleged Euphoria season 3 time jump. Now, the show is slated to start filming in January 2025, but whether things will move forward swiftly remains to be seen.

Between the delays and the reports of creative differences,
Euphoria
‘s future remains unclear.

This is not the first time that Zendaya and Sam Levinson have reportedly gone head-to-head. In early 2024, Variety released a piece that delved into Sam Levinson’s Euphoria season 3 scripts, reporting that Levinson had written a storyline in whichZendaya’s Rue took on a smaller role as a private detective. Zendaya apparently did not approve of this arc, and Levinson was thankfully forced to scrap it. Between the delays and the reports of creative differences, Euphoria‘s future remains unclear.

Despite all these issues, Euphoria season 3 is still happening. The show is expected to begin filming in January 2025, with its core cast members set to return. Hopefully, Zendaya and Levinson can work through their differences in the second half of 2024. If all goes to plan, then we could have a new season of Euphoria by the end of next year. As of now, that season will include Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer.

Of course, I can’t help but keep my hopes low after Euphoria season 3 has already been through so many trials and tribulations. There are several months until the show is set to start filming, meaning we will likely learn more about what season 3 will look like within the next months. Even if Euphoria does come back relatively soon, whether it will match the quality of the previous seasons remains to be seen.
