Many feared dead, 2 rescued, as shops collapse near Anambra governor’s lodge

Several persons were feared dead on Thursday as a two-storey building with shops collapsed at Eke Oyibo market, opposite governor’s lodge in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra state.

Blueprint reports that the incident which occurred around 12 noon left many in fear as most of the traders scampered for safety.

Their belongings and colleagues were trapped by the collapsed shops.

Some traders who witnessed the collapse blamed the disaster on substandard engineering work allegedly used for the construction, adding that the building’s structural integrity could have been compromised.

Blueprint also gathered that the building with about 20 shops had been completed, partitioned and allocated to different traders some of who had started using it while others arranging them to their satisfaction.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident in a statement, however, said the operatives have rescued two victims and took them to a nearby hospital for medical care.

“Meanwhile, on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led operatives at the scene for on-the-spot assessment, the area has been cordoned off and rescue operations are still ongoing,” he added.
