Oyo State Declares Public Holiday For Islamic New Year

The Oyo State government has declared Monday, July 8, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah 1446AH.

Governor Seyi Makinde made the declaration to enable Muslims in the state to celebrate the significant occasion, marking the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year.

In a release signed and made available to newsmen by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the State Government recognized the importance of the Hijrah in the lives of Muslim faithful.

“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared Monday 8th July 2024 a work-free day in the state,” the release stated.

The State Government encouraged citizens to use the day to pray for peace, unity, and progress in the state and the country at large.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” the commissioner added.
