Reps To Donate 50 Percent Of Salaries To Tackle Hunger
The House of Representative on Thursday pledged to donate 50 per cent of members’ salaries for six months to address the hunger across the country.
The house took the decision during plenary that was presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Contributing during the debate in the motion, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu called for an amendment to the motion, urging his colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent of their salaries.
“This government is doing its best but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.
“Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu said.
The motion scaled through and was unanimously passed.
The six months will generate N648m by contributing N300,000 each, N108m monthly.
This is in addition to trailer loads of rice the president had ordered to be shared across the country.
