Zamfara lawmaker worries over hardship in Nigeria
The l House of Representatives member, representing Birnin Magaji and Kaura Namoda in Zamfara state, Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, weekend described the insecurity and current socio-economic hardship in the North-west and country at large as alarming.
He said the demographic concerns require concerted efforts to address socio-economic development and security in the region and the country at large.
Hon. Jaji stated this while delivering a lecture at the public lecture and interactive session titled: “Good governance,” and organised by Zamfara State Students Association (ZAMSSA), ABU Zaria chapter.
He said Nigerians must avoid having an unproductive population, which would lead to the total destruction of the region, adding that education is the only way to mitigate the challenges.
On local government autonomy, he said it refers to the freedom of local governments to manage their affairs, make decisions, and allocate resources without undue interference from other tiers of government.
“Local government autonomy is about empowering local communities to take ownership of their development, harness local resources, and address unique local needs,” he said.
He added that some of the benefits of the autonomy include, unlock economic growth and development, improve service delivery and infrastructure, enhance community participation and engagement, foster accountability and transparency and address local security and conflict resolution, among others.
Hje said youth participation in governance is a symbol of future tomorrow, bringing about mentorship and inclusivity.
He lamented that some subversive agents seek to destroy the future and ruin the society by recruiting some of the youth to be irresponsible in their thinking.
Hon. Jaji urged youth to be responsible, be sound in their reasoning, careful in dealing with issues affecting our well-being.
“Some individuals use social media to justify their actions, spreading lies to serve their interest,” he stated.
“As someone from Zamfara state, I know the extent of the devastation in our state, with socio-economic activities grinding to a halt due to insecurity and we have come together to contribute to the development of our state and the nation,” Hon. Jaji stated.
On the planned nationwide protest, Hon. Jaji said it is not in the interest of the region and the nation in general.
“I acknowledge the hardship being experienced in the country, but our leaders are working round the clock to address it through various interventions,” he said.
