16 feared dead, 17 injured in Ibadan auto crash 

No fewer than 16 persons were feared dead  Tuesday in an auto crash along the Ojo-Iwo Road axis of the Ibadan-Lagos expressway, near the Agbowo/Ajao area.

It was gathered that the auto crash  occurred when a truck  loaded with roofing sheets lost control and collided with an 18-seater hummer bus, a Micra taxi, and a Honda CR-V car on the road. 

Sources said the truck reportedly developed brake failure with all efforts by the driver to rescue the situation failed thereby hitting  three other vehicles traveling in the same direction with the truck. 

A witness at the scene blamed the accident on the ongoing construction of the Lagos -Ibadan express way, forcing vehicles plying the route to be sharing only one side of the expressway. 

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, spokesman, CRC Mayowa Odewo,  said the accident also left 17 others with various degrees of injury.

CRC Odewo said:  “The accident occurred after a trailer carrying iron materials lost control and ran into multiples vehicles including a bus coming from the north with 18 passengers who are majorly children, the trailer also ran into a Micra, and Honda CR-V car 2002/2003 model.

“About 16 people died instantly, 17 people were injured, while two people in the Honda CR-V survived the accident and we’re taken to close by hospital,” he said. 

The FRSC Spokesman added, “Some of the injured people were Hausa’s and they refused to be hospitalised.”
