BREAKING: Nigeria Military Rejects Coup, Vows To Defend Democracy Amid Calls For Russian Intervention
The Nigerian Armed Forces have rejected calls for the military to seize power from the Bola Tinubu administration amid the ongoing nationwide protest against economic hardship.
The security chiefs, alongside the Inspector General of Police and Comptroller General of Customs, vowed to defend Nigeria’s democracy and its sovereignty during a briefing on Nigeria’s national security, monitored by THE WHISTLER in Abuja.
This is coming a day after the security chiefs held an emergency security meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
THE WHISTLER reports that following the eruption of national protests, some groups especially in northern Nigeria have been calling for the military to take over.
Youths in the region have also been hoisting Russian flags which suggest a call for foreign intervention in the situation.
The development prompted the Russian government to disown the protesters on Monday.
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria had said neither the Russian government nor any Russian officials are involved in or coordinating the activities.
“The Embassy has noted the reports in Nigerian media and the circulation of videos and images in digital media depicting protesters in northern states of the country carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The Government of the Russian Federation as well as any Russian officials are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way.
“As always, we emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of individuals, and they do not reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in the issue.
“We respect Nigerian democracy and believe that peaceful demonstrations in conformity with the Nigerian law are a manifestation of democracy. However, should these events lead to any disruptions or acts of violence we strictly condemn them,” the embassy had said.
