Foundation to FG: Build more schools for People Living With Disability
A non-governmental organisation, Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation, Monday, urged government at all levels to assist in the building of more affordable schools for people living with disabilities, which will afford them opportunity to compete with their peers that are able.
The NGO stated this during its annual sustainability fundraising for the aged/ lecture.
It stated that the exorbitant school fees charged by the few schools available for people living with disability is beyond the reach of the parents of disable children and as such, many of them miss the opportunity of going to school and get themselves educated as others who are able, a situation which further compounds their problem.
Mr Oshilaja, therefore, appealed to the government to build more schools that can accommodate more people living with disability.
He also decried the way members of the public treat and relate with people living with disability, emphasising that in most public functions they fail to accord them the respect and honour they deserve as members of the society.
“Let me single handedly acknowledged a renowned Muslim Cleric and Preacher, Hon Abdulateef Abdulakeem, for his humility and respect for people living with disability, because I can tell you that anytime our foundation invites this man, he always honour people living with disability, even with a tangible and bogus donation, infact, people should emulate him,” Oshilaja said.
Responding, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, who was represented at the function by Mr. Azeez Aliu, m added that Lagos state government has been very consistent in taking care of the needs of people living with disability, and an agency was also set up by the state government Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, LASODA, to attend to their needs, also that some schools were set up to take care of their interest.
He also assured the foundation that Lagos state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remain committed to improving life of people living with disability.
