The Masters of the Universe movie has cast its live-action Teela. The character is a sorceress in the iconic franchise, which is set on the planet Eternia and blends medieval iconography with science fiction elements and primarily follows the longstanding battle between nemeses He-Man and Skeletor. The current iteration of the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, after many years in production hell, sees Bumblebee director Travis Knight at the helm with Red, White & Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine playing He-Man.
Mattel Films has announced that Riverdale star Camila Mendes will be joining the cast of Masters of the Universe as Teela. The character was previously portrayed in the 1987 live-action feature adaptation of the property by Chelsea Field and has been voiced by a variety of actors in animated titles over the years, including Linda Gary, Venus Terzo, and Kimberly Brooks. No further information about Mendes’ iteration of the character is known at the time of writing, as plot details of the movie are being kept under wraps.
Masters of the Universe Could Be Camila Mendes’ Next Big Franchise Stepping Stone
The Star Has Largely Appeared In Original Projects Outside Of Riverdale
By agreeing to play this iconic character opposite Nicholas Galitzine’s He-Man, Mendes may have found her next major franchise after the end of Riverdale, the show that featured her breakout performance as a modernized version of iconic Archie Comics character Veronica Lodge. The edgy CW reboot show ran for seven seasons and a total of 137 episodes, but every other major role she has played has been in a project that has not been a part of a major IP or spawned any sequels or follow-ups, including her popular 2022 Netflix movie Do Revenge.
Do Revenge
, which starred Mendes and Maya Hawke as a pair of vengeful teens, earned a Certified Fresh score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Since her tenure in the Riverdale cast came to an end when the show aired its series finale in 2023, Mendes has continued appearing in one-off movies, starring in the 2024 romantic comedies Upgraded and Música. However, she has started to make a turn back toward IP-based projects with franchise potential. This includes the recent announcement that she will be starring in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel, in which returning stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are in talks to reprise their original roles.
However, in spite of its struggle to get to the screen, Masters of the Universe may have the most franchise potential of the two projects. I Know What You Did Last Summer is a slasher property, so her character may be killed off, which would prevent a future return in any possible sequels. If the new He-Man project goes forward and becomes a success, the fact that she is playing such an iconic and integral role could provide her with the perfect replacement for Veronica Lodge going forward.
