While Hugh Jackman‘s return to his superhero persona in Deadpool & Wolverine may currently be the main talking point when it comes to the Australian actor’s career, the arrival of his 2021 sci-fi movie on Netflix is another great throwback reference to his back catalog. Netflix’s new addition to its library may not be one of the best Hugh Jackman movies, but it’s still an enjoyable watch.

The 2021 sci-fi movie focuses on reliving memories via technological intervention

Reminiscence is a mind-bending neo-noir sci-fi movie that went rather under the radar when it was released in 2021. The movie follows Jackman’s character, Nick Bannister, as he uses his advanced memory tech to relive his time with a woman he loved but who ultimately went missing. Nick operates the technology not only for commercial gain but also to assist in prosecuting criminals. Eventually, his two areas of work collide, and he discovers the woman he misses so dearly is caught up in activities of which he was unaware.

The movie’s presence on Netflix gives Reminiscence a chance to be discovered by a new audience. Despite being produced on a budget of roughly $65 million, the film failed to get even half of that amount back in box office revenue. The movie’s concept is relatively original, but it’s not entirely fresh. It was met with fairly lukewarm reviews upon its release, but partially due to being compared to similar movies that were far more successful. That being said, Jackman’s performance as the story’s protagonist is one of the movie’s highlights.

2017’s The Greatest Showman included a team-up between Hugh Jackman as PT Barnum and Rebecca Ferguson as Jenny Lind – an acting duo that’s repeated in Reminiscence. Of course, their roles as part of The Greatest Showman‘s cast are drastically different from their characters in the 2021 sci-fi movie. However, Ferguson plays Mae in Reminiscence – Jackman’s love interest. So, there is a similar connection between their characters in both projects, even if PT Barnum ultimately rejects Jenny’s advances.

So, reuniting Jackman with Ferguson for Reminiscence clearly wasn’t a recipe for guaranteed success.
