I Hope Blake Lively's Sequel To 84% Thriller Doesn't Continue Her New Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Summary

  • Fans hope Blake Lively’s next movie after It Ends With Us will break her current “Rotten” streak on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Lively’s latest performance in It Ends With Us is considered one of her best, but received mixed reviews from critics.
  • Anticipation is high for the sequel to A Simple Favor, hoping to match the original’s critical acclaim and avoid disappointment.

It’d be a shame if Blake Lively’s next movie after It Ends With Us fails to match the level of her critically acclaimed 2018 thriller. Lively has starred in dozens of films and television shows including Accepted (2006), Green Lantern (2011), and Savages (2012) after making her film debut in 2005’s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Lively rose to prominence from her roles as Krista in Ben Affleck’s critically acclaimed heist movie The Town and Serena in Gossip Girl (2007-2012).

Lively’s latest performance in the romantic drama It Ends With Us is already being considered as one of her best roles. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us was adapted for the screen by Christy Hall (Daddio, I Am Not Okay with This) and was directed by Justin Baldoni, who also co-stars with Lively as Ryle Kincaid. The cast of It Ends With Us also includes Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, and Brandon Sklenar.

It Ends With Us Is Blake Lively’s Second Straight “Rotten” Movie On Rotten Tomatoes

It Ends With Us & The Rhythm Section both have “Rotten” critic scores

After the mixed reception of It Ends With Us and the poor reviews for The Rhythm Section, Lively is due for another critical success.

Without including Lively’s voice cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine and IF, her last two movies, including It Ends With Us, have received a “Rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the overwhelming positive 94% audience score of It Ends With Us, the film was only about to earn a score of 58% among critics, indicating an overall mixed-to-slightly-positive consensus. Lively’s most recent film before It Ends With Us, 2020’s action thriller The Rhythm Section, received a critic score of just 29%.

Lively’s next movie, a highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s A Simple Favor, can finally snap this “Rotten” streak. According to Rotten Tomatoes, A Simple Favor is the most critically acclaimed movie that Lively has starred in besides The Town, indicating that the sequel has the potential to be just as good as the original and become one of Lively’s best films as a result. After the mixed reception of It Ends With Us and the poor reviews for The Rhythm Section, Lively is due for another critical success.

A Simple Favor 2 Receiving Bad Reviews Would Be A Huge Disappointment

The original film is one of Lively’s best

Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) smirks with red hair in A Simple Favor.

A Simple Favor is a genuinely good movie, so if the sequel doesn’t deliver, it will be a huge disappointment. Directed by comedy legend Paul Feig, A Simple Favor blends the line between dark comedy and psychological thriller to create a mysterious and compelling narrative. Lively and Anna Kendrick, who both starred in the original, are set to return for A Simple Favor 2, which is currently projected for a 2025 release. In the meantime, there is still a chance that It Ends With Us can work its way up to a 60% “Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.
