On Sunday, August 25, the “Smile” singer shared a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter), addressing the situation. She criticized the media for twisting her story into a narrative that made her appear heartless and irresponsible. Lily Allen shared that the deliberately misleading reports had resulted in a wave of online harassment, with some of the worst comments coming in the form of death threats.
“People have been furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry, and as a result, I’ve received some really abhorrent messages, including death threats,” Lily Allen wrote. “Some of the most disgusting comments have been all over my social media channels.”
Despite the harassment, Allen assured her followers that she was coping but admitted that the past few days had been incredibly difficult. The backlash has taken a toll not only on her but also on her family. She called on her followers to avoid falling for sensationalized news stories and to do their own research before engaging with misinformation designed to divide and incite outrage.
“I’m okay,” she added, “but it’s been a really tough few days.”
In her post, Allen also defended her record as a dog owner, pointing out that she has been rescuing dogs since she was a child and has always been attentive to their needs. “I have never been accused of mistreating an animal,” Allen stated. “This past week has been very distressing.”
She took the opportunity to clarify the full story behind her decision to return the dog, a rescue named Mary. Lily Allen explained that she and her family adopted Mary from a New York shelter and grew deeply attached to her. However, Mary suffered from severe separation anxiety, which became increasingly difficult to manage. According to Allen, they tried working with a behavioral specialist and a professional trainer recommended by the shelter to address the issue, but Mary’s condition did not improve.
In one instance, Mary even chewed through her children’s passports, prompting concerns about their ability to care for her. Despite their best efforts, Allen and her family ultimately concluded that their home wasn’t the best environment for Mary. They made the difficult decision to return her to the shelter, prioritizing the dog’s happiness and well-being above all else.
“We loved her very much,” Allen explained, “but after months of trying, we realized we couldn’t meet Mary’s needs.” She added that Mary was rehomed within 24 hours to someone they know and trust.
Allen’s post served as both a defense of her actions and a plea for people to be more responsible consumers of information. “Please stop acting on clickbait articles if you haven’t done your due diligence,” she urged. For now, Allen continues to deal with the fallout but remains steadfast in her belief that she made the right decision for Mary’s well-being.
