Star Wars New Movie Logo Breaks A Five-Year Winning Formula, & I Really Dont Like It

The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s logo makes a change that has been a tradition for five years – a change that is as baffling as it is pointless. At D23 2024, Disney offered an insight into the upcoming Star Wars movie. Of the few theatrical projects announced, The Mandalorian and Grogu is the furthest along the production timeline as it began shooting in August 2024. This allowed Jon Favreau to provide those in attendance with a brief glimpse into The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s story, with footage showcasing several exciting elements of the project.

The reveals of the D23 footage for The Mandalorian and Grogu showed the return of Star Wars Rebels‘ Zeb in live-action and the titular duo riding an Imperial walker beneath the feet of marching AT-ATs. As such, wider connections to the Star Wars timeline are expected amid an action-packed plot centering around Din and his adopted son confronting more Imperial remnants. Another reveal at D23 was The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s logo, which featured a frankly baffling change to a five-year-old tradition.

The Mandalorian Title Cards Have Always Included Character Silhouettes

The Tradition Has Been Around Since The Mandalorian Season 1

Firstly, it is worth exploring the tradition in question. Since The Mandalorian season 1 began being marketed in 2019, the logo featured a silhouette of Din Djarin. The now-iconic font of “The Mandalorian” featured a black outline of the titular character in the second “A” of the title card. Naturally, this title card portrayed the lone wolf vibe the show was going for, while hiding the reveal of Grogu from the first episode of the show’s debut season.

For The Mandalorian seasons 2 and 3, this silhouette tradition has continued. However, with the addition of Grogu to the main cast, he was also added to the title card for seasons 2 and 3. Rather than just showing Din Djarin as a silhouette, he and Grogu were both visible as dark outlines in the second “A” of The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian And Grogu’s New Title Card Makes A Big Design Error

Herein lies where The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s new title card has a glaring, confusing design flaw. In the logo showcased at D23, the silhouette tradition remains unbroken. Grogu and Din are both shown in their typical black outlines as part of the show’s logo, only now with “and Grogu” added beneath “The Mandalorian” to reflect the film’s title. However, the outlines of the characters are included in the first “O” of The Mandalorian, as opposed to the second “A,” breaking five years of tradition.

Why this change has been made remains to be seen. It could be the case, though admittedly unlikely, that it is a story decision to change the positioning of the silhouettes that will not become clear until the release of the movie. That said, it is more likely that this is simply a design error from those at Lucasfilm. Regardless, the change is somewhat baffling and makes little sense, though is minor in the grand scheme of things, and should not impact anyone’s enjoyment of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
