The 2024 reboot of The Crow had a long and troubled production history before releasing to a tepid reception, but will The Crow 2 ever happen? Based on the 1994 film (itself based on the titular comic book), The Crow follows the troubled Eric Draven (Skarsgård) who comes back from the dead to avenge the lives of himself and his girlfriend. The original film became something of a cult classic, but was overshadowed by the death of star Brandon Lee. The 2024 film wasn’t marred by tragedy, but instead was held up by years of production hell.

Besides its lengthy production process, The Crow reboot was mired in controversy for numerous reasons, not the least of which was the questionable aesthetic choices for the main character and the decision to remake the story in the first place. Despite a luke-warm response from critics, The Crow earned high marks from fans (via Rotten Tomatoes) and still has the chance to become a blockbuster despite a somewhat slow start. While the chances of a sequel seem grim at the moment, The Crow could still become a big enough hit to warrant a follow-up sometime in the future.

The Director Discusses Sequel Plans

After a long and arduous process of bringing The Crow back to the big screen, the latest news sees director Rupert Sanders discuss sequel plans. Though Sanders remains adamant that The Crow is a complete story, he did reveal that certain talks have already happened when it comes to continuing Draven’s story. “There have been conversations about it,” Sanders said cryptically, before suggesting that he might have more ideas once the film has been out for a while longer.

It’s a hard one because it was such a love story between two people. There’s a lot of things that I had devised and thought about that were ideas within some of the drafts of the script, or some of the elements that I was putting together that were kind of cool, but felt like they weren’t ready yet. As far as his journey was, I love the idea of being able to move like Nightcrawler between the other world and this world, and how pulling people between, and the increased power of one side or the other — It’s fascinating.

There have been conversations about it, and my mind at the moment is a bit of a … I’ve given all I can creatively. But I’m sure a couple of weeks sitting around doing nothing after the film’s been off my radar for a bit, I’ll start to get the itch and start thinking, “Maybe it could be…” But we’ll see. If we’re lucky enough to have those conversations, it would be great. And I’m sure that collectively the team behind this could deliver something incredible for the next chapter.

The Crow 2 Is Not Confirmed

A Sequel Isn’t Flying Yet

Unsurprisingly, The Crow 2 has not been confirmed, and it isn’t really clear if a sequel will ever actually happen in the future. The production of the 2024 reboot was anything but smooth, and that might be enough to turn off any studio from wanting to touch the comic book cult classic again for a long time. On the other hand, if The Crow somehow becomes a financial success, that could always be a motivator to bring him back once again. Regardless, the ending of The Crow didn’t leave the door open for a logical return.

Will Eric Draven Return?

The somewhat conclusive ending of The Crow does severely limit who could return in the sequel. However, the most logical returns are that of Bill Skarsgård as The Crow (originally Eric Draven), and the love of his afterlife, Shelly, played by FKA Twigs. Danny Huston’s Vincent was dragged into the deepest part of hell, but the devious deal he struck with the mysterious entity could see him return somehow. However, the most logical progression of the story would be to introduce a new cast of supporting characters.

Will Eric Ever Return From The Afterlife?

The Crow movies all deal with the supernatural, and even though the ending of the 2024 reboot was conclusive, there’s nothing stopping Eric from coming back again. His sacrifice saw him trapped in purgatory while Shelly gets to live once again, and it stands to reason that The Crow 2 will follow Eric as he finds a way to return to Earth. Since he was spared the gruesome fate that Vincent received, Kronos may have other designs for The Crow, and he could be sent back to the real-world to fight some new evil and protect Shelly.
