Alyson Hannigan reveals that out of all her films, she doesn’t want her children to watch American Pie yet. Directed by Paul Weitz, the 1999 comedy follows Jim (Jason Biggs) and his high school friends, who plan on losing their virginity before prom. Hannigan, known for her role as Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appeared in the original movie and its sequels, portraying Michelle Flaherty. An enthusiastic band member who is surprisingly knowledgeable about sex, Michelle forms a relationship with Jim and marries him in American Wedding.

During a recent interview with Us Weekly, Hannigan revealed that she’s not ready for her kids to discover American Pie. She explained that they may be aware of the Taylor Swift song “So High School,” which mentions the film, but haven’t seen it yet, noting, “That’s the one I dread the most.” Read more of Hannigan’s comments below:

They haven’t mentioned that they wanna see it, but they know how exciting it is. Taylor might’ve piqued their interest, but not that they’ve mentioned. That’s the one I dread the most. … Hopefully, I can just ride it out until they’re in college.

American Pie Is Beloved, But Not Necessarily Family Friendly

The Franchise Contains Many Sexually Explicit Moments

While the American Pie movies are successful and the original is considered a classic, their brand of humor isn’t very family-friendly. One of the most memorable moments from American Pie, which became a part of popular culture, involves Jim practicing sex. After hearing that third base feels similar to apple pie, Jim’s father discovers him using one on their kitchen counter. That kind of raunchy comedy is what typically stands out, as other highlights from the franchise include Jim’s more than awkward first time and his son interrupting his masturbation in American Reunion.

When it comes to Hannigan’s character, she spends most of American Pie hilariously talking about band camp. Michelle has funny moments throughout the series, especially in the first sequel, where she revealed what she can be like when aroused and helped Jim improve at being intimate, going as far as using instruments and staging a relationship. However, the American Pie franchise can also be heartfelt, and her romance with Jim eventually became a main storyline.

American Pie is beloved as a sexually explicit coming-of-age film and, besides Hannigan and Biggs, it features a large cast that includes Natasha Lyonne, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge. Still, the movie is not suitable for all audiences, and because she is such a major part of the series, it makes sense that Hannigan doesn’t want her children watching it yet. It would be very awkward for her kids to see her in sexually explicit scenes, even if they are portrayed in a comedic manner. Perhaps this is a franchise they can always avoid.
