The victims, identified as Fatima Sule (12), Nasiya Sale (12), and Huwaila Sa’adu (13), lost their lives while attempting to cut grass near the pond to feed their livestock.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, through its spokesman ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmoud, confirmed the incident on Sunday.

NSCDC’s Buji Local Government Divisional Officer received a distress call from some Tulla community members at around 11:00 AM on Saturday, and the officer, along with the division’s disaster management team, rushed to the scene.

Mahmud said after a 30 minutes search and rescue operation that involved help of local community members, the bodies of the three girls were recovered.

The statement reads, “The bodies were later taken to the nearest Health Center in Tulla village, where they were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.”

The girls’ remains were returned to their families and buried according to Islamic rites.
