Streaming sensation Valkyrae has voiced her frustration over comparisons to fellow streamers Pokimane and QuarterJade following her recent decision to dye her hair. As one of the top female content creators in the gaming world, Valkyrae stands alongside other prominent figures such as Pokimane, QuarterJade, and LilyPichu. Despite her success and individuality, she’s found herself increasingly being compared to her peers—especially when it comes to her appearance.
During a live stream in August 2024, Valkyrae revealed her newly dyed hair, which now features dark purple tips. However, instead of focusing on her fresh look, some viewers immediately drew parallels between her and other streamers. One viewer in particular compared her to QuarterJade, whose real name is Jodi. Though Jodi currently sports short red hair, she has experimented with various hairstyles in the past, including long, dark hair and bright purple locks. This history of hair transformations seemed to prompt the viewer to comment, “She thinks she’s Jodi,” after noticing Valkyrae’s new purple ends.
Reacting to the comparison, Valkyrae read the comment aloud during her stream, expressing her disbelief. “Because I dyed my hair purple?” she questioned, clearly baffled by the remark.
But that wasn’t the only comparison Valkyrae faced. Before her stream even began, another viewer speculated that she had dyed her hair to avoid being compared to Pokimane, another leading figure in the streaming world. Valkyrae addressed this speculation directly, pointing out the absurdity of the situation. “First of all, being compared to Poki and Jodi is a compliment,” she acknowledged. “Secondly, what do you want me to do? Shave my head bald?”
Valkyrae went on to highlight the strange nature of being judged for simply dyeing her hair, a common practice among many women. “It’s weird dyeing my hair and being compared to other women because I dye my hair. I feel like a lot of women have hair… It’s like, what am I supposed to do?”
The streamer also recalled a time when she had bleached her hair, leading to further comparisons with Pokimane on TikTok. She found it ironic, considering that her lighter hair at the time contrasted with Pokimane’s darker locks. “It’s kind of funny because I have lighter hair right now, and Poki’s hair is darker,” she remarked, adding a touch of humor to the situation by saying, “Look at me. I look Asian!”
This incident is just the latest in a series of moments where Valkyrae has addressed her viewers’ critiques. In May, she responded to a fan who suggested she should be married before having children, showing that she’s no stranger to standing up for herself against unwarranted judgments.
While the comparisons may keep coming, Valkyrae continues to assert her individuality, making it clear that she’s not trying to be anyone else—just herself.
