At San Diego Comic-Con’s Wynonna Earp panel, Tubi dropped a first-look trailer for its hotly anticipated Wynonna Earp: Vengeance special, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Unlike other reunions — or, as Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) puts it in the trailer, “reboots” — Wynonna: Earp Vengeance has a story worth telling. At SDCC, Screen Rant learned that the 90-minute movie of sorts is a self-contained narrative. Even though Earpers like myself who have watched all four seasons will find a ton to love about the special, Vengeance is also more accessible to newcomers.

Despite a dedicated fanbase, Wynonna Earp was axed ahead of its fourth outing. When it was revealed that Tubi had commissioned a one-off special, I, like many other passionate fans, rejoiced. In the show, Melanie Scrofano plays the titular character, who is the great-great-granddaughter of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp. Joined by a cursed Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), her magic-wielding half-sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), and local sheriff Nicole, Wynonna protects her hometown of Purgatory from revenants. The One-Off Tubi Special Looks Like A Charming Return To Form For Wynonna Earp

To put it broadly, there are many things we need to see in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, and from what I glimpsed in the first-look trailer, it seems like Tubi’s special is going to deliver. Developed for TV by Emily Andras (Lost Girl), the supernatural Western horror series actually had a pretty satisfying conclusion. Although the fourth and final outing had to navigate a murky cancelation and the COVID-19 pandemic’s unique obstacles, I thought Wynonna Earp ended each character’s story really fittingly. In fact, Andras told SDCC attendees that Vengeance‘s story considers what comes “after happily ever after.”

In the Wynonna Earp finale, Doc and Wynonna decide to ride off into the sunset together, while Waverly and Nicole exchange vows and stick around Purgatory. I want to know what these beloved characters have been up to in the intervening years, and if they’re all content with the choices they made. The Wynonna Earp special can answer these questions as it delves into a new chapter for the series. According to the trailer, Wynonna’s slain enemies are back for revenge. That said, I think Wynonna Earp: Vengeance can be both a charming return to form and a fresh adventure.

Wynonna Earp’s Cast Brings Familiarity To A Brand-New Story

In my opinion, what’s most exciting about SDCC’s Wynonna Earp: Vengeance trailer is the cast’s obvious — and continued — chemistry. When it was announced that virtually every character would return for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, I knew the special was in great hands. Wynonna Earp definitely has a distinct tone and brand of humor, but it also boasts a ton of heart. The first-look trailer confirms that the actors are all just as passionate about the series as fans. When it comes to reunions — or reboots — that’s the best outcome we can hope for, really.
