Borno Flood: JNI Calls For Support For Affected People
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of recent flooding which has claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed properties across several states in the north.
In a statement by JNI’s Secretary-general, Prof. Abubakar Khalid-Aliyu, in Kaduna on Monday, the JNI President-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, expressed deep concern over the tragedy.
“We are deeply troubled by the devastating impact of the floods and extend our heartfelt condolences to those affected,” Abubakar said.
“The loss of lives, displacement of millions, and destruction of property is heartrending and calls for urgent humanitarian support.”
He said the floods, which ravaged states including Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kano, Zamfara, Kogi, Niger, Katsina, Kebbi, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kaduna, had left many in dire need of assistance.
“The Maiduguri flood, resulting from the Alau Dam breach, was particularly horrific,” Abubakar noted while adding that “we pray that Allah accepts those who lost their lives as martyrs and grants their families strength and patience in this period of grief.”
He urged well-to-do individuals, philanthropists, and humanitarian organisations to support the affected states and communities.
“We encourage mosques, religious bodies, and civil society organisations to spearhead community-based support systems and engage in relief efforts,” Abubakar said.
He called “for a united and compassionate response to alleviate the suffering of the affected population and facilitate their return to normalcy.”
Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, also received condolences from JNI.
The organisation prayed for the quick recovery of those injured and displaced and for the immediate restoration of livelihoods disrupted by the calamity.
“We must come together to support those affected and work towards preventing such tragedies in the future,” the Sultan said.
