Futurama May Have Just Revealed Where The Show's 25-Year-Old Secret Language Came From
Futurama has been full of references to a secret alien language since the show first premiered, and after 25 years, Futurama season 12 may have just revealed where this language comes from. The world of Futurama is full of Easter eggs and references to long-running bits of worldbuilding that have been around for decades, with the adult animated series featuring a surprising amount of continuity when it comes to these odd details. Futurama season 12, episode 7 features another one of these moments, although it may actually contain a massive revelation about the show’s notorious coded messages.
Futurama season 12, episode 7, “Planet Espresso” has dropped on Hulu, with it introducing an all-new extraterrestrial species to the world of Futurama. The episode sees Hermes inherit a coffee farm that his father once ran in Jamacia, with him taking the Planet Express crew to his former home in order to get production started. Eventually, Hermes and Farnsworth discover an alien ship from the planet Thermos buried deep under the farm, with it being full of alien coffee beans. However, this isn’t the biggest revelation discovered within the spacecraft.
Alienese Has Been Around Since Futurama’s Pilot (But The Show Has Never Revealed Who Speaks It)
There Are Two Versions Of It
A secret language dubbed Alienese can be seen all throughout Futurama, with it being seen as early as the show’s pilot. Alienese is a complex coded language that is made up of a variety of alien symbols, with the writers adding this coded language to Futurama in the hopes that eagle-eyed fans would eventually spot it and decode it. The first version of Alienese, AL1, was cracked by viewers surprisingly quickly, leading the writers to come up with an alternate version of Alienese known as AL2. AL2 was much more difficult to crack, with it taking years before it was finally decoded.
Alienese can be seen all throughout Futurama, with it appearing in the background of nearly every episode. Alienese is present all over 31st Century Earth as well as many of the other planets that the Planet Express crew travels to, creating a major mystery over who actually speaks it. Alienese never seemed to be tied to a specific alien species, with the most common theory being that Alienese is a universal language that most inhabitants of the 31st Century know. However, Futurama season 12 may have just unveiled the language’s true origins.
Futurama Season 12 Finally Provides An Explanation About Where Alienese Came From
It Could Come From The Planet Thermos
Although it isn’t explicitly stated within the episode, it seems like Futurama season 12, episode 7 shows the alien species that created and spread Alienese throughout the galaxy. In the episode, Hermes and Farnsworth enter the ship from Thermos, with them drinking the incredibly powerful coffee and being transported into a vision where they are able to communicate with the deceased Thermians.
While wandering through the ship and learning about the history of the Thermians, Hermes and Farnsworth discover several coffee dispensers that are each labeled with an Alienese word. Hermes is able to translate them, but since Alienese is the main language used on the Thermian ship, it could be that they are the ones who originated the language. After all, the Thermian ships have been traveling throughout the galaxy for millions of years, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to have come to Earth and learned about Alienese. Instead, it seems more likely that they created it.
Futurama’s Thermos Is The Perfect Way To Pay Off The Alienese Running Joke
They May Have Spread It Throughout The Cosmos
Having Alienese be the primary language of the people from Thermos would perfectly pay off the use of Alienese throughout Futurama, as it makes the widespread use of it make so much more sense. As the Thermians explain, they are a species that is millions of years old, with them discovering the coffee and becoming an advanced species because of it. The Thermians then spent their time traveling throughout the cosmos and bringing this coffee to other alien planets, allowing them to taste it and become even more advanced.
Since the Thermians have been doing this for millions of years, it is entirely possible that they could have taught the many other alien species Alienese, allowing them to communicate. This would explain why Alienese can be found in so many places throughout the world of Futurama, with it having become so widespread that it is now a common language in the 31st Century.
