IGP Detains Three Officers Over Death Of Kwara Student

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has detained three officers over their alleged involvement in the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The IGP, in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the police, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Monday ordered a detailed and comprehensive investigation into the alleged killing of the student.

Ishola, 21, a National Diploma 2 student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the institution was allegedly killed during a fuel hike protest by the students on September 4.

The incident that occurred in a mysterious circumstance in the Fate area, Ilorin was said to have incited tension in the student community as the institution marched to the state police command’s headquarters demanding justice.

Although the Kwara Police said it was investigating the matter and had identified “actors and witnesses”, the IGP has ordered the Homicide section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to embark on the investigation.

The statement read partly, “The officers involved in this incident have been identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Command and they have been consequently detained for investigation.

“The Inspector-General of Police, who is deeply saddened by this unfortunate event that has led to the loss of a young Nigerian, expresses his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

“He acknowledges the profound grief and loss caused by this unfortunate act and reassures the family and members of the public that Justice will be served.”
