The Okirika Youth Association in Rivers State has given Oando PLC a seven-day ultimatum to settle long-overdue land rent for oil wells operating in their community, following years of exploitation and neglect.
According to the association, the oil wells, previously owned by Agip, have been extracting resources for six years without paying the host community, sparking widespread frustration among youths and community members.
The youths are demanding immediate payment of all outstanding land rent accrued over the six-year period, as well as implementation of development projects to improve living standards in the community.
They also seek environmental remediation to clean up and restore polluted land and waterways, and compensation for damage caused by oil activities, including pollution.
They warned that if company fails to meet their demands within the stipulated timeframe, they would occupy all Oando offices nationwide, organize mass protests and rallies, and initiate legal proceedings.
Spokesperson Tamuno Joe emphasized the community’s resolve, stating, “We have been patient for too long. It’s time for Oando to take responsibility for their actions.”
