Every Returning Original Character In The Platform 2

Even though The Platform 2 primarily revolves around a new set of characters, it does not shy away from featuring some familiar faces from the original movie. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, the Spanish thriller, The Platform, performed incredibly well both commercially and critically when it landed on Netflix in 2019. Its success encouraged the streamer to greenflag its sequel, The Platform 2, which unfolds in the same dystopian setting as its predecessor but attempts to expand the overarching lore established in the original film.

In its early moments, The Platform 2 focuses on two characters, Perempuan and Zamiatin, who were not a part of the first film’s roster. However, as its story progresses, The Platform 2 marks the return of many characters from the 2019 movie. While some of these characters become crucial drivers of the sequel’s narrative, others appear in smaller capacities towards The Platform 2‘s ending, adding a layer of intrigue to the franchise’s enigmatic storytelling.

6 Goreng

Played by Iván Massagué

Played by Iván Massagué, Goreng is the main character in The Platform, who enters the pit to earn a diploma. He agrees to spend six months in the pit in exchange for a diploma and sees his stay in the vertical prison as a win-win situation. According to him, not only will staying in the prison help him learn some valuable lessons but it will also allow him to quit smoking for good. Unlike many other prisoners, who opt to carry weapons with them to the pit, Goreng carries Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote.

In The Platform 2, Goreng appears in the final arc, where the movie first features his descent to the bottom of the pit with the young girl from the first film. The sequel then shows a confusing mid-credits scene in which its main character, Perempuan, somehow recognizes Goreng and hugs him when she sees him at the bottom of the pit. Although the movie does not delve into the details of their relationship before they entered the pit, it seems likely that Goreng was Perempuan’s boyfriend before she entered the vertical prison.

Perempuan’s backstory in The Platform 2 reveals that she arrived at the vertical prison to learn to forgive herself for being responsible for her boyfriend’s son’s death. The fact that she knows Goreng suggests that he was her boyfriend. If this narrative connection between the two films holds true, The Platform 2 seemingly retcons Goreng’s story by establishing that he did not come to the pit to earn a diploma. Like Perempuan, he, too, was seeking peace and redemption after his son’s demise.

5 Trimagasi

Played by Zorion Eguileor

Trimagasi is portrayed as one of the primary antagonists in The Platform. Although he initially acts friendly with Goreng and helps him settle into the vertical prison’s environment by encouraging him to eat, he becomes his biggest enemy when they end up in one of the lower levels of the prison. To ensure his survival, Trimagasi ties Goreng to his bed and resorts to cannibalism to survive. His backstory reveals that he ended up in the vertical prison because he accidentally killed a man after he threw his television set out of his window.

In the movie’s initial moments, he also hints at his evil tendencies by telling Goreng that he and his former cellmate cannibalized another prisoner to sustain themselves. Miharu later kills Trimagasi before she and Goreng consume his flesh to survive. Given how Trimagasi dies in the original film, his appearance in The Platform 2 seemingly suggests it is the original film’s prequel. Although The Platform 2‘s timeline is not explicitly mentioned, it seems to unfold around a year before the first movie’s events.

4 Miharu

Played by Alexandra Masangkay

In The Platform, Miharu is introduced as a character who goes down to level 333 every month to look for her child. However, the movie’s ending later suggests that Miharu was only going down the pit because she knew the Authority was leaving a child on the lowest level as a part of their social experiment. The Platform 2 portrays her in a different light, where she is one of the members of the Authority. She and another man are seemingly responsible for deciding which child will be sent to the bottom of the pit.

Since The Platform 2 serves as a prequel, this revelation suggests that Miharu was once a part of the Authority before she, too, ended up in the vertical prison. As the Authority’s former member, she knew children were being left alone in the lowest level of the pit. Therefore, to ensure they were well-fed, she traveled down to level 333 in The Platform.

3 Baharat

Played by Emilio Buale

Emilio Buale’s Baharat is among the key players in The Platform who help Goreng send “the message” to the Authority. He and Goreng protect the panna cotta to ensure it reaches the top level but later send the little girl they find at level 333. In the original film, Baharat also carries a rope with him, hoping to climb levels when someone from above does not promote solidarity in the vertical prison. Although his appearance is short-lived in The Platform 2, he seems to have the same moral code and principles as he hopes to bring more unity among all prisoners.

2 Unnamed Prisoner With Down Syndrome

Played by Gorka Zufiaurre

When Goreng and Baharat head down to the bottom of the pit in The Platform and distribute an equal amount of food to all inmates, they run into an unnamed prisoner with Down syndrome. In The Platform 2, Perempuan and Sahabat cross paths with the same prisoner when they land at level 55. Although Perempuan and Sahabat consider taking the prisoner with them when they plan to descend further down, Dagin Babi and his army arrive at the level before they can leave.

1 Imoguiri

Played by Antonia San Juan

Imoguiri is portrayed as a former member of the Authority in The Platform who willingly ends up in the pit after being diagnosed with cancer. In the first film, she keeps denying that there are children in the pit when Miharu claims to be looking for her daughter down there. This establishes that, despite being a member of the Authority, she knows little about the full scale of the central social experiment. In The Platform 2, Imoguiri only briefly appears as an interviewer, which again establishes the movie as The Platform‘s prequel.
