Amid an increase in break-ins, in the country Snaginspector, the public education arm of Spacecube Africa, has urged landlords and property developers to prioritize passive security measures to protect their properties.
The organization emphasized the importance of installing durable security features that do not require constant monitoring but provide continuous protection, such as reinforced doors, secure windows, and robust fencing.
In a statement signed by Snaginspector’s Relationship Manager, Bridget Dawah, the company outlined key considerations for effective security installations, starting with the proper materials for burglar-proofing.
“Burglar-proofing should be made from wrought iron, which is more resistant to bending and intrusion compared to aluminum,” Dawah said.
“Although aluminum may appear aesthetically pleasing, it is not as secure. Property owners must remember that these security features serve a protective purpose, not a decorative one.”
The statement also highlighted the importance of installing strong security doors at all access points, including balconies and entrances.
“These doors should be bulletproof and fitted with toughened locks that have multiple shutters to minimize the risk of forced entry,” Dawah added.
According to the Snaginspector, concrete and steel fencing, with blockwork at intervals, provides maximum security. However, the organization advised that fences should not be excessively high, allowing for easy access by emergency responders.
In addition, the use of barbed wire is recommended over broken bottles or electrification as a more reliable deterrent against intruders. Property owners were also encouraged to design fences in a way that makes it difficult to place ladders or climb over them.
Snaginspector further advised tenants to carefully assess the security features of a property before renting.
“Renting homes without proper security—such as weak doors, vulnerable windows, or inadequate fencing—puts your safety at risk,” the statement warned.
