The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odimegwu has stated that flooding and other natural disasters plaguing the state and the entire country can be avoided if certain considerations are observed by relevant stakeholders.
Odimegwu who stated this during an interview with journalists over the weekend, stated that Nigeria must encourage continuous massive tree planting exercise.
He noted that the government must also discourage afforestation, illegal sand mining and reckless housing development schemes along coastal areas prone to flooding.
He added that the government must ensure proper land documentation and authorization for building development.
According to Odimegwu, these strategic considerations will have far-reaching benefits, including erosion control, food security, ecosystem stability, economic growth, climate regulation, and responsible management of land and mineral resources, ultimately safeguarding natural habitats.
“In order to completely save lives and property and equally escape the seemingly annual natural disasters, residents, developers and other relevant stakeholders must collaborate with both the state and federal government to forge a united front to bring a lasting solution to the regularly occurring life threatening situations,“ he said.
Odimegwu disclosed that Anambra State’s environmental protection law requires new residential buildings to have catchment pits and green areas.
He stated that the measure that was non-negotiable helps to effectively manage water runoff and provide windbreaks and aeration, mitigating the impact of heavy rainfall.
He lamented that Anambra faces significant environmental challenges, including annual flooding and erosion, which has claimed 30 per cent of the state’s landmass.
To address these challenges, Odimegwu urged state actors to collaborate with the government.
He also recommended that the federal government construct more dams and dredge rivers to control water levels during rainy seasons.
Odimegwu commended the Emergency Service Agencies for their prompt rescue efforts and encouraged a more proactive approach.
He also commended Governor Soludo and the State Environment Ministry staff for their tireless work in protecting the environment.
