Smile 2 star Naomi Scott talks about the few challenges that she faced while portraying the pop superstar Skye Riley. Directed by Parker Finn, the sequel to the original Smile follows Skye’s journey after she’s infected by the Smile curse after a late night encounter with an old high school friend. In the film, Skye has a weird habit of over-consuming bottles of Voss water.
Talking about the character’s weird quirk, Scott told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s “really hard to down a bottle [of Voss],” and she didn’t “anticipate how uncomfortable that would be,” especially when she had to “chug each time” for every take. The actor stressed that it was important for her to get this detail right about Skye, but filming the scene wasn’t easy. Check out what she said below:
During this movie, I wanted to ask for a round of something else, believe me. No, Iโm joking. Itโs actually really hard to down a bottle [of Voss]. I guess I didnโt anticipate how uncomfortable that would be. For example, the one take that ends with me smashing the shower, that was an hour-long reset. So we only did that take all the way through two times, but we started the take [in a place] where it would then be cut.
Parker didnโt want to waste a [full] take and have to reset if he knew that it wasnโt the one, but we did it five times. So I had to chug each time, and it was really important to me that she downed the whole bottle at that point in the movie. There was a moment before where she does drink quite fast, but she doesnโt drink the whole thing. Or maybe she does at the beginning, as well; I canโt remember. But youโre right; there was a lot [of Voss chugging].
I was also very well known for being well-hydrated anyway, because I had a massive two-and a-half-liter bottle with me all the time. We named it Gidget. Fluids were just coming out of me for a month. I was crying so much; I was snotting, so we had to replenish that. There were so many tears, and I had to just drink water to fill myself back up again.
There Are More Details About Skye
In Smile 2, Scott’s pop superstar has a history of alcoholism and drug use. With the plot revolving entirely around Skye’s experience being taunted and manipulated by the Smile Entity, Smile 2 takes a close focus on her character and everything that makes her who she is. There are many details that viewers might have missed about the pop star. Scott’s comment points out that this one small detail is crucial for the character.
The detail also adds another layer to the pop star’s history of over-indulging herself.
Scott’s comment also unveils the lengths she went to portray Skye while the pop star goes through the Smile Curse. The actor gives a special behind-the-scenes insight into filming Skye’s weird quirk. Her “uncomfortable” experience chugging water sheds light on what the character might have gone through, given that downing a bottle of water wouldn’t likely be natural to a person, which means that this habit of Skye’s might have been adapted through time. The detail also adds another layer to the pop star’s history of over-indulging herself.
Our Take On Smile 2’s Skye
Skye Has A Heavy Side
The ending of Smile 2 reveals that The Smile Entity tortures Skye almost exclusively through mind tricks, having her relive painful memories and playing out her worst nightmares to break her spirit. Skye is on the verge of breakdown while fighting against the Smile Entity throughout the movie. She was already dealing with the weight of her past before being infected with the curse. This detail reveals more about Skye, indicating the path she has walked to take her to that point in life.
Chugging a bottle of water may be a small detail, but it’s simply not something that everyone would do. Given that Skye isn’t exactly an athlete, chugging a bottle of water could be an old habit. Judging by how uncomfortable Scott was trying to play the character in Smile 2, this small detail could suggest that Skye might be harming and punishing herself in a way, which would tie this weird quirk to the character’s self-loathing.
