The Genius Media Nigeria reports that Former Nigerian soccer star, Chief Segun Odegbami has made an urgent appeal for assistance on behalf of Peter Fregene, a 1968 Olympian and former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s national soccer team, who is battling a critical medical condition.
Fregene, affectionately known as “Apo,” has been hospitalized at Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State. Odegbami shared a distressing photo of Fregene’s condition, highlighting the need for immediate medical attention.
“Apo’s situation is dire, and we cannot afford to delay,” Odegbami said. “He requires urgent medical care, and we’re calling on well-meaning Nigerians, corporate organizations, and the government to come to his aid.”
Odegbami expressed frustration over the lack of a functional welfare scheme for retired athletes, forcing him to make public appeals for support.
“We’ve relied on the goodwill of a few individuals, including Femi Otedola, Mike Adenuga, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, but we cannot continue to burden them,” Odegbami stated. “It’s time for a sustainable solution to support our aging sports heroes.”
Fregene’s medical bills are mounting, and Odegbami is seeking assistance to transfer him to Ohara Teaching Hospital in Delta State.
“Tony Ojesina has kindly covered the ambulance costs, but additional funds are needed,” Odegbami added. “We’re counting on the generosity of Nigerians to help Apo in his time of need.”
Odegbami concluded with an emotional appeal:
“Let’s come together to support one of Nigeria’s football legends. Peter Fregene needs our prayers and assistance. Let’s show him that we care.”
