Meet Agwu, New ABSU Pro-Chancellor Who Served As Lawmaker For 12 Years

The Abia State University (ABSU) on Monday witnessed a mass shakeup with the State Governor, Alex Otti replacing the principal officers and appointing Professor Ndukwe Okudo as the new VC and Dr. Agwu U. Agwu as the new Pro-Chancellor.

Otti’s decision follows an investigation into the conduct of the school’s affairs by the sacked officials of ABSU.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu said during a briefing on the outcome of the Executive Council Meeting, chaired by Governor Otti that a white paper revealing the findings of an investigation committee will be released soon.

He said, “Dr. Alex Otti has approved the release and publication of the White Paper report of the full visitation panel of the Abia State University, Uturu.”

One of the key appointments that received a rapturous welcome was that of Agwu U. Agwu, a former speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.

Agwu, who hails from Ozu-Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area has been phenomenal in the state’s political space since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

In 2003, Agwu represented the Arochukwu constituency at the Abia State House of Assembly, contesting under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was re-elected in 2007 under the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) founded by former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu who is currently the Senator representing Abia North.

He emerged as the Speaker. To emerge, the former lawmaker flawed Mr. Orji Lekwauwa representing Bende North constituency with 20 votes to three in the election conducted by the clerk of the House, Mazi Orie Orji.

In 2011, Agwu returned under the PDP which was his former party.

Agwu’s Academic Profile

In 2023, Agwu gained his PhD in Political & Admin Studies (International Relations) at the University of Port Harcourt. Before his PhD studies, Agwu finished his MSc in International Relations at the University of Port Harcourt in 2016.

The businessman and former lawmaker earned his Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations at the University of Port Harcourt in 2013.

Agwu graduated with an Upper Credit from the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Bauchi State where he studied Food and Institutional Management.

Before his HND, Agwu had obtained an OND in food and Institutional management at the College of Technology, Nekede, Owerri in Imo State.

The ABSU Pro-Chancellor who is keen in contributing to national development sat for the West African Examination Council Exam at the Abam High School in Ozu-Abam, Arochukwu LGA in 1980.

His visionary leadership earned him several awards including the ‘Outstanding Legislator of the Year’ by the Nigerian Senate in 2006 and an ‘Honorary Georgia Citizen’ in Georgia, Atlanta, USA in 2008.
