NIGERIA @ 64: Gombe Gov Grants 23 Convicts Clemency

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has pardoned 23 convicts as part of the state’s 28th anniversary and Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday.

This was contained in a goodwill message of the governor to the people of the state and the nation on the dual celebrations, where he commuted life sentences of two inmates to 15 years.

He also reduced two death sentences to life imprisonment, and reduced one inmate’s sentence to 10 years. He also commuted the sentences of four death row inmates to 15 years in prison.

This followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. The governor expressed hope that the pardoned individuals would turn a new leaf.

Governor Yahaya, in his goodwill message reflected on the state’s progress since its creation in 1996 and called for unity and peaceful coexistence. He noted the economic challenges faced by many citizens, particularly in light of the removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to rising inflation.

While recognising the financial strain on families, the governor highlighted efforts to ease the burden, including the distribution of food to over 750,000 beneficiaries and transport allowances for state workers. He also mentioned that discussions are ongoing about the implementation of a new minimum wage.

Yahaya outlined his administration’s achievements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He emphasised the construction of over 900 kilometers of roads across all local government areas, expansion of healthcare facilities, and improved access to education through the recruitment of teachers and the construction of classrooms.

“As Gombe State looks to the future, I pledge to continue focusing on empowering youth, supporting farmers, and improving the quality of life for families across the state,” he said.

He urged citizens to remain patient and united in the face of economic challenges, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would lead to a more resilient and prosperous future for the state.

The governor who called for peace and stability in Gombe and across Nigeria, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the state’s long-term growth and development.
