Student dies after allegedly being flogged ‘I64’ strokes in Ogun

A student named Ariyo Monday has died after allegedly being flogged “164” strokes by a teacher at Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Nigerian activist JustAdetoun, in a video shared on Instagram, explained that the boy’s teacher had brought a dustbin to class and told the students not to break it.

Ariyo then jokingly said that the trash can was purchased with student funds, which angered the teacher.

The teacher was said to have reported to the principal, who, in turn, authorized the punishment.

In her account, JustAdetoun claimed that Ariyo was subjected to 164 strokes of the cane, after which he collapsed.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) observed from the video that Ariyo was hospitalized and seemed to be in grave pain.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola clarified that the punishment involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps.

Odutola noted that the student passed away at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, with his body now at Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy.

She said, The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”
