The DCU's Third Green Lantern Confirmed As Aaron Pierre Is Cast As John Stewart In Lanterns

The DCU’s Lanterns show officially casts Aaron Pierre in the role of iconic Green Lantern John Stewart. Lanterns is one of the upcoming installments in the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter, starring human Green Lantern heroes John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Lanterns‘ DCU plot is expected to connect the franchise’s Earth-based stories with its cosmic arena, possibly adapting one or more classic or modern DC Comics storylines.

On October 9, 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery confirms that Aaron Pierre has officially joined Lanterns as John Stewart, one of the most famous DC characters to wield the Green Lantern ring. Known for his part in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old and Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, Pierre previously left the MCU’s Blade, which continues to be in early development at Marvel Studios. Lanterns follows John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a murder mystery in the American heartland. Before Lantern arrives, James Gunn’s Superman will introduce another Green Lantern โ€” Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion.

What Aaron Pierre’s Casting Means For The DCU

Lanterns Seems To Be Among DC Studios’ Top Priorities After James Gunn’s Superman

As James Gunn’s Superman and Peacemaker finish their respective shoots, Warner Bros. has started to provide updates on other DCU projects. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns seem to be the studios’ top priorities, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow recently cast its main villain and Lanterns now welcomes one of its two protagonists. Lanterns‘ shortlist for Hal Jordan has been getting smaller, with Kyle Chandler reportedly being eyed for the role. Aaron Pierre’s casting as John Stewart means that Hal Jordan’s casting news will likely arrive sooner rather than later.

Recent set photos have given audiences their first look at Guy Gardner and his unusual and surprising Green Lantern costume in Superman.

The Green Lantern Corps were largely absent from the DC Extended Universe, as only one member appeared on screen throughout the DCEU’s 10-year run โ€” Yalan Gur, who died in Earth’s battle against Darkseid’s Apokoliptian forces in Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Zack Snyder later cast Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart, planning to add him at the end of his cut of Justice League. However, the studio disagreed with the addition, and Snyder replaced John Stewart with Martian Manhunter. Therefore, Aaron Pierre is officially the first big-screen, live-action portrayal of John Stewart.

Aaron Pierre was bound to get a sizable role in a superhero project, as he was cast in an undisclosed MCU role early in Blade‘s development. Blade‘s many behind-the-scenes problems led Pierre to drop out of the MCU, but it seems like studios kept a close eye on him, as he also was among the top contenders for John Stewart as soon as Lanterns began its casting process. With Aaron Pierre’s acting career on the rise and Lantern s‘ pre-production in full gear, Lanterns is on track to be a standout installment of the DCU’s first chapter.
