The Old Man star Jeff Bridges has given an uncertain update on the future of his action-thriller series. Starring Bridges in the titular role of Dan Chase, a former CIA operative living off-grid who is forced to go on the run after killing a man in a home invasion, The Old Man season 1 debuted on FX on June 16, 2022 with seven episodes, and was met with largely positive critical response. The show was renewed for season 2, which premiered in September 2024, and the explosive finale has fueled speculation that season 3 of The Old Man could happen.
In an interview with Variety, Bridges gave his views on the events of season 2, and also weighed in on whether the show would get a season 3. Discussing some of the key plot points of season 2, and how the finale sets up another season, Bridges also emphasized that he was unclear about whether the series would return, and that the cast and crew were waiting for the greenlight, which he believed could take a few days to come. Well, we donโt know. Weโll see in a few days, I think. Maybe theyโre waiting for that last show to give us the word. I donโt know.
What Bridges’ Response Means For The Old Man’s Future
It Seems Likely The Action-Thriller Will Bag A Season 3
The streaming success of The Old Man season 2 bodes well for its renewal chances, although nothing is guaranteed at this stage. Action-thrillers tend to be well-received by audiences, and the huge success of franchises like John Wick will have done The Old Man no harm at all. But, as Bridges’ comments suggest, the network is likely waiting for the streaming figures for the season 2 finale to help them make their minds up definitively about a renewal.

FX’s new series adaptation of The Old Man, based on the novel by Thomas Perry, has a stacked cast including Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow.
If The Old Man season 3 does happen, as expected, it seems likely that Bridges will return, especially with the cliffhanger ending needing resolution, and many of the other core cast could also reprise their roles too. How many seasons the show could run for remains unclear at this point, but the world-building, as well as Dan’s troubled backstory, means that there could be several more seasons of material to explore in terms of storytelling.
What Could The Plot Be For The Old Man Season 3?
Season 2’s Cliffhanger Ending Neatly Sets Up Season 3
The season 2 finale ended on a cliffhanger, with Dan agreeing to help rescue Harold, and possibly adopting another of his personas – Lou Barlow, which will probably become a key focal point of season 3. I also think that season 3 will prominently explore Emily’s relationships with her three “fathers,” all of whom have shaped her in some way, and this is something that could play a key role in the future of The Old Man season 3.
