Akwa Ibom state government has resolved to mobilise action against Gender-Based Violence as it joins the global community to mark the commencement of 16 days of activism aimed at ending all forms violence against women and girls.
At a rally that attracted various Non Governmental Organisations and coalition groups, the members to amplify the voices of survivors of GBV , advocate for policy change and demand an end to GBV in homes, schools, communities, state and nation.
“Today, we join the world for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign to raise awareness and mobilize action to end violence against women and girls.
“Starting from today, November 25 to December 10, we will amplify the voices of survivors of Gender -based Violence, advocate for policy change, and demand an end to Gender-Based Violence in our homes, schools, communities, State and nation, ” the group said in a statement.
According to the statement endorsed by Barr Emem Ette, Secretary of the state GBV management committee, 1 in 3 women worldwide experience physical or sexual abuse.
“This is heartbreaking and alarming and demands our collective action. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights and a major public health issue,” it stated.
According to the programme of activities, there are expected to be a sustained media awareness campaign during the period using radio and television as well as drama sketches.
There will also be a self defence training for women and girls as part of the 16 days activism programme.
