Arcane Movie Follow-Up Set In New Region Of Runeterra Teased By Showrunner

Arcane showrunner Christian Linke has teased a possible movie follow-up set in a new region of Runeterra, expanding League of Legends‘ onscreen presence. Arcane season 2 ended with peace between Piltover and Zaun, the two cities coming together to battle their common enemy of Ambessa (Ellen Thomas) and Viktor (Harry Lloyd). Following the finale, Linke confirmed follow-ups are in development, including stories set in Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia. With many regions across Runeterra yet to be explored, it’s not clear yet which champions are going to have their stories told next.




Speaking with GamesRadar, however, Linke teased a possible movie follow-up to Arcane, which could explore one of the future regions on their radar. The showrunner explained how the biggest focus on creating a new story would be the characters featured, signaling that it would take quite some time before the next project arrives, “depending on if it’s a series or a movie.” This teases the potential for a film set within the League of Legends universe, even if it could take years to complete. Yeah, they take time. What I said [in the Twitch interview] was we’re exploring these regions – Noxus, Ionia – and we always focus on characters, you know? When we think about stories we are exploring, it’s always about a specific champion or specific character – which I can’t name yet, because there are several.

But, yeah, it takes time – depending on if it’s a series or a movie. We’re exploring both in many, many directions. A lot of it comes down to finding the right people, the right vision, the right idea, the right story. That’ll take years and once we have confidence that something’s happening, we’ll talk more about it.



What Linke’s Statement Means For Arcane’s Follow-Up Projects

Some Might Not Be TV Shows

Linke has also previously confirmed some characters in Arcane will return in other League of Legends projects, signaling whatever’s next could continue the stories of the show’s most important characters. Mel (Toks Olagundoye) has a direct connection with Noxus, while the three-eyed raven in the series finale teases the arrival of Swain, the region’s ruler. While this story could be fleshed out over the course of another TV show, it’s now possible some tales will be told through feature-length films instead.

Given the first League of Legends series took nine years of production to create two seasons, a possible movie would still take a long time to craft. Even though none of the upcoming shows will directly be Arcane season 3, a movie could even finish up any loose ends from the show, with an emphasis on what’s to come for familiar characters in future projects.

Given the large number of champions scattered throughout League of Legends, a movie follow-up could explore smaller stories, with just enough room for future expansion from other projects. Given Arcane is just the start for how much for Runeterra could be explored, there’s boundless opportunities for a movie to tackle part of a region on its own. With stories set in three more regions already confirmed, it remains to be seen which of them, if any, will be a full feature.

Arcane
