A beloved comedy franchise that began in 2001 gets a promising update for its future. The 2000s was a strong era for comedies, with the independent film movement of the 1990s paving the way for pioneers of the genre. Movies like American Pie and The Big Lebowski, as well as TV shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, set up the end of the ’90s and start of the ’00s with comedy on a strong footing. Filmmakers were getting bolder and more unique with their comedic choices, with comedies becoming stranger, quirkier, and more unusual.
Several low-budget comedy movies produced in the 2000s found a strong audience, with many becoming cult classics, and some even developing into franchises. Some of the most popular comedy franchises of the 2000s included Meet the Parents, Scary Movie, and The Hangover, as audiences flocked to theaters to enjoy the humor and quirkiness that they brought. Now, a lesser-known franchise that enjoyed a cult following during the early ’00s could make a comeback soon.

Director Jay Chandrasekhar Has A Positive Update
Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers was first released in 2001 and became a box office success, grossing more than $23 million against a production budget of $1.5-$3 million. The movie ended up developing a cult following over the years, with some of its cast enjoying successful careers after, including Kevin Heffernan and director Jay Chandrasekhar. A long-awaited sequel was released in 2018, outgrossing its predecessor but receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics. Despite this, the cult following of the franchise led to hopes that Super Troopers 3 would be produced.
Per Slash Film, Chandrasekhar revealed in an interview with Holmberg’s Morning Sickness radio show that the comedy troupe is in discussions about the potential of making a third Super Troopers movie. Chandrasekhar specifically said, “We’re in the final discussion with Disney about making Super Troopers 3.” The previous movies were released by Fox Searchlight Pictures; following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the mega-studio now owns the rights to the franchise.

Disney’s Upcoming Movie Releases – From 2024 To 2029
Between Pixar, the MCU, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios, and the famed animated studio, Disney has several exciting releases slated up to 2027.
However, with Disney evidently expressing interest in continuing the comedy franchise, it seems there is plenty of hope for Super Troopers. The specific mention of a “final discussion” indicates a deal is close to going through, which could mean that a third movie could arrive within the next few years. Though it has been several years since the second film, a release in 2026 or 2027 would still be a shorter gap between the initial Super Trooper installments.
