Actor Tom Brittney reveals he tore Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel costume during his audition for the DCU’s Superman movie. David Corenswet’s casting as the DCUs Superman has been one of the biggest reveals in James Gunn’s DC Universe so far, as Corenswet’s Superman is set to be the face of the whole franchise. Not only will David Corenswet star in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman movie, but he will also star in several other DCU projects afterward.
On an episode of the Hellish podcast, actor Tom Brittney talks about his experience auditioning for James Gunn’s Superman. Brittney reveals that he attended a costume test, saying, “It was actually Henry Cavill’s Superman suit – it was his actual suit.” To Brittney’s surprise, Cavill’s Superman costume was allegedly a little too tight. He continues: “It takes about half an hour to get into it – to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it…[jokingly] I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.” Tom Brittney bears a striking resemblance to Henry Cavill, and he stands one inch taller than the former Superman actor.
Many More Actors Have Worn The Big-Screen Superman Suits Before
It’s common for superhero movies to carry out costume tests and screen tests using previous movies’ wardrobe. For instance, Henry Cavill himself screen-tested for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel wearing Christopher Reeve’s original Superman suit, and various actors screen-tested for Batman Begins wearing Val Kilmer’s Batman Forever suit, including Cillian Murphy. These tests serve as a glimpse at the actors’ ability to embody the characters’ larger-than-life presence on the big screen before a final casting decision is made.

It seems like James Gunn was looking for a muscular actor for Superman from the start, as Tom Brittney is slightly taller than Henry Cavill and apparently more muscular than Cavill was when he wore the DCEU Superman suit. Superman‘s David Corenswet is three inches taller than Cavill, and he bulked up for the DCEU’s Superman in record time. Superman’s impressively big frame may contrast with his kind personality in the DCU movie, as it does in the comics.
