Game of Thrones‘ Jon Snow spinoff series may happen after all following a surprising new update. Kit Harington previously shared with Screen Rant that the Game of Thrones spinoff was cancelled, explaining that it is “off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough.” The Jon Snow spinoff was discussed as a sequel that would take place after Jon went beyond the Wall with the Free Folk at the end of Game of Thrones season 8.
As per Deadline, HBO’s Casey Bloys has now said “Maybe we’ll try again” about the Jon Snow spinoff while speaking at a preview event for HBO and Max’s upcoming content in 2025. Bloys did not provide further details on what could happen to rekindle the spinoff’s development. Several other Game of Thrones spinoffs are already in the works at HBO, including House of the Dragon season 3, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, whose first season is debuting in 2025, and Aegon’s Conquest.
What This Means For The Jon Snow Spinoff
HBO Is Still Interested Despite The Project Being Shelved
The Jon Snow spinoff is not actively back in development, but Bloys’ comments emphasize that the studio has not closed the door on the project. “Maybe we’ll try again” is far from an ironclad commitment, but it shows that Bloys, and likely other HBO executives, are still interested in possibly finding a way to move forward with the series. House of the Dragon‘s success proves how successful a Game of Thrones spinoff show can be, making a sequel series focused on a beloved character like Jon an irresistible possibility.

Game Of Thrones: Everyone Who Knew Jon Snow Was A Targaryen Before Him
Jon Snow learning he was a Targaryen became a key point in his character arc, but he was one of the last to learn who his real parents were.
However, there is no Jon Snow spinoff without Harington being invested in the project and reprising the role. He has made it clear that he only wants to return and continue Jon’s story if there is a worthwhile story to tell. Two years have passed between word of the spinoff’s development first getting out in 2022 and Harington’s comments in 2024 about it being shelved. If a compelling creative avenue could not be found in that time, it is unlikely that one will be found any time soon, especially since the series is no longer in active development.
There Is Still Hope For The Jon Snow Spinoff
There may be more hope for the Jon Snow series than Harington indicated, but nothing is officially moving forward at this time. In the meantime, there is no shortage of Game of Thrones spinoffs on the way, and even more will likely follow if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is as successful as House of the Dragon. For now, HBO’s primary focus remains on its ongoing and actively developing Game of Thrones projects, but there is still a chance of Jon returning in an exploration of his post-season 8 story.
