John Lithgow has been a staple in Hollywood movies and TV shows for decades now. Spellbound has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences and critics aren’t in agreement. Directed by Vicky Jenson, the animated Netflix follows Ellian, voiced by Rachel Zegler, as she goes on an epic adventure to save her kingdom after a spell turns her parents, the King and Queen of Lumbria, into monsters. Lithgow voices Minister Bolinar in the movie, which also features voice performances from Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, and Miguel Bernardeau. Following the movie’s release on Netflix on November 22, Spellbound reviews are now widely available online.

With reviews for the film having now made their way online, Rotten Tomatoes reveals that Spellbound is sitting at a disappointing 44% critics score from 27 reviews, as of writing. Audiences, however, appear to be enjoying the animated film much more, as the Popcornmeter score is a more respectable 66% with more than 100 user ratings. Both of these scores could fluctuate over the coming days as more reviews are added.

Though general audiences seem to be enjoying Spellbound more than critics, both the critics’ score and the Popcornmeter suggest that the movie has room for improvement. Even though the Spellbound voice cast may be one of the movie’s strengths, a key complaint in the reviews is that the movie as a whole feels too formulaic and familiar.
Since Spellbound isn’t totally dazzling general audiences, it may not benefit from positive word-of-mouth. This means that the animated flick could struggle when it comes to viewership. It should be noted, however, that family-friendly animated fare can sometimes overcome lackluster reviews simply because very young viewers – who aren’t the ones logging user scores on Rotten Tomatoes – can be less picky and discerning about what movies they want to watch multiple times.
